Just a query about this weeks scrambling route. The route description make it sounds reasonably tame (grade 1, no rope or slings necessary), however, in one of the images the scrambler has a helmet, a harness and is all roped up. That doesn't suggest an easier route...

The other question is about start point. It's probably easier to locate when you're out there, but I'm having trouble finding it on the map. Is the grid reference for the start point?

This isn't meant to be critical, just to clarify a few things. It was good to see a scramble potentially at the easier end of the scale, since a lot seem quite hard and beyond my capabilities!

Thanks.

James

Hi James,

The photograph was actually during a friends MIA training and was taken a bit further along on Brim Fell which is a grade 2. The weather on the day we did this one was not exactly ideal photography weather.

The start point is around SD 268 974

This month's grade 1 will be followed by a grade 1 route in Snowdonia, then one in Scotland. These will be followed by grade 2 routes in each area then grade 3 routes to give a series that gets progressively harder. If you have a look in the routes section you'll also find a range of routes including several low grade routes in each area.

Cheers Dave. Look forward to the coming grade 1s. Maybe one of the grade 2s will be doable by me!

Thanks.
James

We used it as a climbers descent and it is no problem. However, it was very polished so maybe in dry conditions it will be good for anyone. In wet conditions, maybe slippery and a bit of concern for firm foot holds.

Paul thanks
is the start near goats water or more to the side of coniston as the map shows with the arrow link OM* provided??

the grid ref starts more around the back end of it rather than the side??

bit confused?

and the weather is going to be bad so i do have a backup plan ...

I'm very sorry, I clearly didn't read the above route description properly and didn't realise my bundling error until I just checked your grid ref. on Streetmap. I, for some unexplainable reason, was thinking of Easy Terrace on Dow Crag (Old Man of Coniston) which is a 3S scramble route. I can only think that it was the picture of the guy rigged up for a climbing route that lead me into the assumption of Dow Crag (Easy Terrace being the only scramble on Dow Crag). Although in the same area, it is not the route you were looking at. I'm very sorry if my mistake caused you to unnecessarily change your plans for the day.

Paul

Hi Paul
it wasnt a problem as what with the weather we decided to just walk instaed of scrambling.

we went out on our new planned route sunday but got stopped in our tracks big time by the wind knocking us clearly off our feet on many occasions!
didnt even get as far as goats water from walna scar road so decided to turn back and take it on another day..not to worry and thanks anyway..

Hi,

I did this 'scramble' last week with my girlfriend. I'm not sure if we got the starting point wrong or something, but we both thought it was about the worst, most boring scramble we had been on yet. Fair enough, there are some scrambles where you can easily avoid difficulties if they seem to be insurmountable, but on this it seemed you had to actively weave around pointlessly looking for bits of rock to climb on. To me, searching out difficulties for their own sake defeats the object of scrambling and 'relegates' it to the world of climbing.

Cheers,
Richard
