We've got some DEETfree stuff to use, if any Scottish-based OMers fancy pitting it against the midgies this summer, drop me a line at jon@outdoorsmagic.com and we'll see if it works as claimed :-)
Now all gone I'm afraid. Test feedback to follow in the next few weeks.

 Jon, you've got mail.
Do you want it tested on West of Ireland midgies too?
 Are Irish midgies fierce?
Yes, but they have a lovely accent.
 :-)
Yes, they can be, and my mum (who's coming with me) is a midge magnet!!
Haven't met a Scottish midge yet though, so can't compare!

Jon, I have been using DEET-free Mosi-guard for years and it's very effective. Is this something 'new' or just another brand doing the same thing? Mosi-Guard uses lemon eucalyptus oil, or Citrodiol as they brand it. We have used it since I had a bad reaction to DEET in 1998 and I also managed to damage my headtorch when some DEET spilled on it! I was given samples of Mosi-guard at a travel trade show that year and was immediately converted. My wife is a total mosi-magnet and uses it religiously, including in South Africa and Mexico, and we now suffer a mosquito problem in the South of France so we would be glad to try whatever brand X might be to see how it compares...

First, that's all the samples accounted for.
John, as I understand it, it's not Mosi-Guard per se, but lemon eucalyptus oil is listed among the ingredients along with tea tree oil and various others.
DEET, as you say, is quite nasty stuff, particularly in high concentrations.

I'd put my vote to mosi-guard as well we've been using it for around 10 years and my wife is also a biting insect magnet (obviously much sweeter blood) and it works, makes you smell funny though!
