I always use soap flakes for all my sport/outdoor kit - so glad I do now. You can still get "Lux" - it's just not called that anymore, as it's now sold directly by the company that makes it rather than Lever Brothers (or whatever other big company it was). Does mean it's not so widely distributed, but my local Sainsburys sells it.

It is a bit hit and miss to get hold of.
Mrs F was going to throw out a box that we found at the back of the cupboard under the stairs, but fortunately I managed to stop her.
It's good kit.

Not sure what parts of the country the stores are based in, but 'Home Bargains' stores sell it for £1.50 per box.
But that's a Bargain for the Home!
Sorry...nearing 28 hours without sleep now!
Apparently there's just one factory making soap flakes now, but they are available in several guises including Granny's... Never put a granny in the washing machine though. You can wreck their bearings...
 Wreck your granny's bearings.....?
There are Home Bargains shops in Halifax and Sheffield, btw.

Boots do own brand soapflakes for £1.55, just bought box this afternoon.

i have always used Paramo & Nikwax. it works. but i do not let my wife wash my walking gear, i do it all myself. sad i know but if i get wet then i have only myself to blame. yes i do love my wife bill

I usually wash my gear in normal none bio washing powder.
I've not got any of the new DWR Goretex fabrics, but I've not noted any deteriation in the performance of std goretex, Karrimor's own waterproof fabrics or Paramo with a normal wash and spin.
I give them a very occassional reproofing.

Mine is called a "laundry ball" and I got it in Lakeland in Windermere, it is a plastic container about the size of a squashed egg with lots of little coloured balls in it - it was expensive but seemed a good idea - the packaging says "replaces traditional laundry soap, cost effective, no soap, no color fading, environmentally friendly, hypo-allergenic, safe and gentle for all fabrcis, leaves no soap residue, no harmful chemicals, no fiber deterioration" - as you may guess from spelling, made in California. I am currently using it for all washes and it seems OK, I keep forgetting to notice so it must be.

From Lakeland Plastics? Do you have a contact other than the shop in Windermere?
