This looks worthy of a watch. The trailers make it look very tempting so I've already staked my claim. Nice to see so many places I know in them too. This Sunday (29/07) is Northern Scotland. I've never walked North of the border so maybe it'll show me what I'm missing. I've got a week in Skye next year so I'll take extra interest in that part of the programme.

Oooh, don't mind if I do. Thanks for the tip, I'd forgotten this was happening, doh...

The last picture looks suspiciously like the Cuillin, although the patch of grass doesn't tally. (there is grass at the top of Sgurr nan Gillean but the view behind doesn't look right).
Pretty sure that's from Bruach na Frithe (ridge from Sgurr nan Gillean with Bla Bheinn over it in the background).

As a handy tie-in the first in the new series of Wainright's Walks follows on BBC4. Helvellyn is first up. Yes that's 2 whole hours of quality mountain porn on every Sunday for the next 5 weeks! (Wainwright is actually 6 weeks)
 Thanks John B, I hadn't noticed that.
Granada started a very similar series last week, fronted by Fred Talbot. The episode I saw was about the Eastern fells and took in High Street. It was okay, though I felt it was a little too condensed, only lasting 30 mins. Having done the exact walk myself it seemed to take 10 mins on the flat path before the ascent and showed none of the haul up itself or the walk back down again.
If we get a dry day in the next month, I want to take in Striding Edge myself so this'll be a good appetiser.

Great, but clearly no chance these days of a media mountain event without McNeish. Bring back Muriel Gray.
 Nah - Muriel's too funny.
Gryff's probably got a clause in his contract that that prevents anyone taking part who is more entertaining than he is.

extend your sunday`s "mountain" experience by swiching to BBC4 at 10 pm. A new series of Wainwright`s walks starts with Helvellyn.
 <Bump>
Starts in five mins :-P

I enjoyed it as a taster, never been up that high in Scotland before and it certainly wetted my apetite. Want to go to Skye and do Suilven, just have to convince other half it will all be worth it.
Nice relaxing Sunday evening tv when all quiet (kids in bed and wife out). Just what's needed.
Good old BBC, bring back more like this. :)
Yeah, good, informative and entertaining. So obvious Gryff just kitted out in new gear, in packages and all but I'm looking forward to the rest of the series
Well done BBC again!
I was a bit worried about him, as he seemed inexperienced (what socks to wear, thin or thick). But that's just me being a wimp.
I thought he did well to hold together a 1-hour programme on his own.
I liked the bothy bit. I don't think that he'll be staying at that hotel again. :o)
I got back from the Lakes too late for tonight's episode (and hadn't set the video!)
Irritatingly I can't see any sign of a repeat later in the week on any of the BBC channels... or have I missed that too? Anybody spotted one?
Had a quick look on RadioTimes, and no mention of repeat as yet, Matt.
I suppose it may be repeated later on. I'm recording them to keep, so if you want, drop me a reminder after series finished and I could post you a dvd.
Thanks Duncan, that's very good of you :)
I'll remember that if nothing repeat-wise shows up in the meantime...
(and assuming I like the rest of the series! ;)

Nice mix of the mountaineering, the history around the mountains and the people who live next to them. I was enthralled by all of it.
I just wish I'd had that winter weather! I can't remember a winters day near the coast like that, he was very lucky.
I noticed that he followed a set of vehicle tracks into the bothy.......
The only thing I would say is they didn't take the chance to make sure "joe public" was aware that climbing Ben Hope in winter conditions is a serious undertaking and the biggest decision isn't the thickness of your socks. I suppose I'm biased as a Winter ML, but there should have been some mention that having the right experience and training was very important when tackling the Scottish Mountains in what was clearly full winter conditions.

Gerald - he DID have a guide with him.
Oh - you mean Cameron needs more experience . . .
and assuming I like the rest of the series! ;)
If not, then Gerald above sums up the first bit nicely, IMO.
having just seen the beginning of Top Gear earlier in the evening, I was minded of the antics of Clarkson, et al during their 'training'. I was concerned that being at the hotel was a bit late to wonder about your gear. Though I'm sure the BBC H&S folk would have had him trained to a degree. By the end of the evening I was looking forward to his personal journey.
I noticed when talking about Am Basteir, he seemed to have forgotten it was written on the board in the school.
