Used to do Old Dungeon Ghyll most years, & pop into the Stickle Barn for a couple at some point. Normally a pretty good atmosphere, though the last couple of times (about 5 years ago I guess) were a bit quieter in the ODG.

Never had to book the campsite, though can get a bit tight for space, & that too has on occasion been pretty lively. Seem to remember various explosions & tents burning down all over the campsite as people got back after a couple or ten & attempted to make tea whilst a little tired & emotional.

Last year was fun.  Gales hit the site and flattened or removed many tents and brought down a tree on the Langdale road.

We were corralled into a small area in the middle of the fields because of the severe weather warning.  The pubs were busy but not too busy

It was a lively night.

On the odd occasion when I've wondered past the ODG I've found the food to be better in the NDG, but maybe the atmosphere is more lively in the SB.

We've spent many a night there and seen floods, gales, frosts so hard we've needed ice hammers to knock pegs in but we still go back.  So yes it is a good place to spend the night after a day out and it's one of the few that are open at that time of year.  Ambleside is close enough and has plenty of places to eat, though booking could be worthwhile at NYE.  We found the Indian restaurant open and it even had a table spare.  The beer is good in both the ODG and Stickle barn.

You can choose between the grumpy staff in the ODG and the pleasant (almost all Eastern European from what we could tell last time) staff in the Stickle Barn.

staff at ODG are fine, pub was much better 20 yrs ago. Stickle was good last year, very cold outside but big firework display after 12 and live music and silly pub quiz earlier plus the 'turn' got the countdown wrong by being a minute or two premature, must have been and age thing, think limited places on campsite these days
