So 100m range on an LED only headtorch which weighs 175g compared to the 100m halogen range on my old Myo 5. Think I'm going to have to buy a new one...

I see it's still on their list of "don't use with lithium batteries" torches.... I'd have hoped they'd have sorted that one out in an upgraded version.

Perhaps Jon could compare this with the Alpkit torch due out next week?

Quite possibly, but I think it's a chalk and cheese situation. I doubt the AlpKit one is anything like as bright, but then it's significantly cheaper. We've got a Petzl one coming. All I can tell you btw, is that the UK distributor tells us that it's in the shops in February, so either it's appeared ahead of schedule or Joe Brown's is selling it on a pre-order basis, which isn't unheard of. [edit - anyway, February is very soon ]

The thing is, LED technology has developed very quickly with new, brighter and more efficient LEDs coming onto the market, so it makes existing torches quite easy to upgrade by changing the internals.

I've always wondered how many people really need all that extra light. I can think of times, usually very early alpine starts, where it would be nice to be able to see beyond your feet, but my hunch is that 90 per-cent plus of headtorch use is for walking to the pub and back from the campsite and reading, cooking and faffing in the tent.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing or that it's not a good thing to have a very bright torch when you do need it, but I do wonder how often these torches are used to their full potential.

LED bike lights are way ahead of walking headtorches for light output, but I guess they have 3 advantages:
- night-time mountain biking is an activity that really does benefit from the increase in light available, so the demand exists
- weight is less of an issue and it's more feasible to use high capacity l-ion rechargeable batteries
- biking speeds generate more of a cooling airflow than walking.

Still, I can't help but expect that technology will advance to get over these issues for walkers and climbers before too long.

Yep, I just converted a Lumicycle halogen can to a triple Cree LED unit and it's as bright as a bright thing, though still not quite at the same level as an HID and still quite neat and compact.

Hope have repackaged their LED bike lights with a headband aimed squarely at off-road night running btw and I think Exposure also has something in the works too. I did a lap with one fo their Joystick Maxx units at SITS last year and it was really impressive for such a compact unit. One of those with a decent headband would do very nicely thanks.

Unfortunately it would cost you £160...

In fact as batteries age, the new XP produces as much light on its lowest setting as the old one does at 'Maximum'.

Not really a suitable use-in-tent headtorch then.

So still need 2 different types of head torch - high power outside use, and low power reading one....

Aye Jon, I've got the Hope headband unit. 2 x 5W LEDs give a belting light, on it's own on foot, or on a helmet to supplement a Lupine Edison HID on the bike. The batteries on the Hope aren't massive capacity though, so it's ok for day-trips but not much use for extended wild country use.

Must admit its a fantastic piece of kit but these days I carry a head torch weighing only 25g in my Cyberlite Sprint thats well built and I've even descended from hills with it so just shows how you don't really need 100m of bright light really unless your in a completely unknown area and need to look for things while navigating.

Just got mine through the post - £48 from Likelys.com  .

How bright??? Bit ugly, but not bothered about that.  Also, not a fan of the clips for the optional 3rd strap, although I can't really see me using that so not a big concern.   Also picked up a Tikka XP for the missus as she didn't like the rear battery mount.  Personally I prefer the balance of the Myo, it's a matter of personal taste.

There have been tiems when I have wanted a birghter torch then my current MYO XP. Having the extra range over a lesser torch makes a big difference IMO. Especially if your moving fairly fast.

There's been a few times I've really needed lots of power:

- Scanning a hillside to find a bothy

- Looking for a safe place to cross a river

- Picking my way through very boggy ground

On the other hand, I've made do with an old 3 led Tikka for a murky night time trip through the Lairig Ghru.

The usual case of the temptation to upgrade to something better, while facing the fact that you've done just fine with what you already have...  So I'm delaying changing my existing head-torches (Duo with 3 LED second light and Tikka) for a while yet, so when i do really see a use for something better the technology will be that much further on (better, and quite possibly cheaper as well).  Samegoes for my waterproofs, avalanche tranbsciever, GPS unit, touring skis, telemark bindings etc. etc. etc. etc!

Pete.
