I had hoped this thread had died away!

I would like to clarify a few points though. The Go lite pack I tried afew years ago did feel like a stuff sack with arm holes and waist belt. I looked at their new packs and yes they do look ok, and I'm sure they last...

I bought a 60 Hyperlite lowe alpine pack afew years ago on the recomendation of Chris Townsend in a TGO mag. He is obviously made of more sinuey stuff than me. It was the most uncomfortable rucksack Ive ever had the pleasure of strapping to myself, with no padding apart from a wee lumberpad. It was stripped down to the nuts and bolts and apart from a weekend backpacking trip it has sat gathering dust in the attic ever since. So I reverted to my macpac which was a whole kilo heavier and have been glad of its quantum harness system. It really is very comfortable and have no desire to replace it.

As they say.' if it works dont fix it! '

My point was probably out of date because kit has changed quite considerably over the last five years. But when you look at the options available now and the weight differance you realisticly save probably 2/3kilos in total which isnt that much more to carry. This was my point to start with.

I've found that comfort in backpacking does involve carrying abit more weither its a tent that weighs 2kilos(heaven forbid!) or a sack that gives me the support and design I need. That was all. I shouldnt have used go-lite as example and I shoudnt have used this thread either! So apoligies to go-lite users and Mat B 11.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they have lightweight back in the 70's? Before my kit buying days but I remember reading about Karrimor doing lighttents and sacks.

But in  the 70s, such lightweight kit was only lightweight relative to kit that preceded it. Compared to today's lightweight kit was very weighty stuff.

I don't see you've got anything to apologize for Mr Nuts. You gave an opinion and some folk disagreed. You didn't hijack Matt B's thread either. You thought you were answering his question.

Gonna disagree again. The more I carry the less I enjoy the walking. Call me a wimp but that be the truth. 2 to 3 kilos  a day makes a difference to me at least.

I managed to miss this thread first time around, but a few observations: one is that it's not a clear-cut 'light is good, heavier is bad', with lightweight kit there's well-designed stuff that does the job and poorly made stuff that doesn't, same as with any other kit. Lightness is just one factor. Also, to complicate things further, as Mike Parsons is fond of pointing out, the lighter and more minimalist your kit, the more it makes demands on the skills of the user to optimise its effectiveness.

That could mean anything from packing a minimal sac so that the weight distribution is right and comfort is maximised through to simply knowing how to use a sleeping bag efficiently. Or even just knowing what to take and what you can leave out and what the implications for your personal comfort and safety are.

As far as durability goes, I think it's fair to say that lighter kit tends to be less durable than weightier stuff, though not always and it depends on the item. Lightweight boots, for example, tend to have thinner sole units and use EVA padding that compresses and deteriorates in use. With the right choice of fabrics, light clothing and equipment can be very tough. Chances are though that they'll also be expensive because high spec materials are more expensive.

With Golite, their initial range was aggressively minimalist, since then they've moved towards a slightly less spartan approach with both clothing and equipment and their latest packs ime are a good compromise between lightness, useability and toughness.
