Well I'm pleased the old git's books will live on. Actually, it's amazing how useful they can still be, decades after they were written.

Also, as far as I know, "AW" never wore red socks (although the pipe marks him out as a bit of an old-skool rambler type).

I think it's rather spooky that they are being printed from Kendal where he lived in his later life and also from someone's own house, which I think was how they were published initially!

Dunno, I think it's rather fitting. Apparently he always wanted the printing to go back to Kendal. The new publishers are in London though.

Wherever they're going to be printed, those guidebooks are his legacy. It's incredible what he did with pen and paper, and weekly bus-trips into the Lakes.

I like the way he comes through in his guidebooks, self-effacing, knowledgeable, with a great love of the hills - yeah, and a miserable old bugger.

Yes, you don't get miserable old buggers from the south-east; must be something about having to drive for hours up the M6. Either you're so stressed that you don't care anymore, or you just don't care anymore.

Alison - everyone's miserable in the S.E and I don't blame them either. I used to live down there but I'm OK now.

Pete - My Dad was born and bred in Blackburn. Oh yes, and some people thought he was a MOB too.

Am I right in thinking, though, that AW was born and bred in Darwen? That's quite different, and has a space-rocket perched on the hill above it. My uncle lives in Darwen.

Alison, think its the latter!

And since when have we had a National Space Center, btw?

Saw signs for it when I was driving up the M1 a while back. We have a Space Programme do we? (No, not Sky at Night - the other sort)

Sorry, completely OT there.

Back to AW's marvelous literary creations......

I live near Darwen and can vouch for the space rocket. Marcus didn't hallucinate it - well, unless we both have. Don't know why it's so far from the space centre though - doesn't make any sense to me.

front of the wainwright video, clearly in shot is the man himself proudly wearing a pair of wooly red walking socks.

Be proud of your red socks I say.

If they are good enough for Wainwright then they are good enough for me :)

Oh yes - I've just seen the picture. OK that's it - I'm off to find out where Mrs C hid my chausettes rouges.

While I look for them I'll try and work out why the Darwen rocket was built so far from Lancashire Space Department HQ at Wigan. (It's cunningly disguised as the Uncle Joe Mintball Factory).

The grumpy old so'n'so would have hated the thought of being shown on this new technology stuff. He didn't even trust typesetters in the days before DTP.

Leave him on parchment/paper I say...

I have to say when the alarm bells first sounded regarding the end of publishing the guides I searched high and low for various guide books at the right price , & got some very tasty fifth impressions . the quality of the older books ,regarding the printing and really top quality paper does make recent copies look cheap.
