Hi

I'll be doing my first backpacking for several years (well, 30+ years since scouting days) in a few weeks. My sone & I will be going, together with daughter and her partner, who lie in the MIdlands.

 We've decided on Scafel Pike

the plan is as follows :-

FRIDAY EVENING

Stay at a camp site nearby

OUR OPTION 1

SATURDAY MORNING

Take one car to our proposd destination, then return to starting point

Walk approx. 10 miles including Scarfel Pike, carrying our gear

SATURDAY NIGHT : wild camp

SUNDAY

Walk approx. 10 miles more to another point, collect car

THIS RELIES ON HAVEING TWO SAFE / SECURE CAR PARKING SPOTS

Can anybody suggest a good route please ?

OUR OPTION 2

Leave both cars together, walk out 10 miles, camp and return in a circular route.

Again, can anybody suggest a good route please ?

Hi Wbmkk

Thats a lot of miles to cover if you have not been out for a long time!!dont forget ascent and decent,it makes a whole lot of differance when you have your house on your back, fit or not!!

I think you should edge more on the 5 miles there and five miles back.Imho.

But if you are fit and want a good walk in go from Langdale, longest walk to scafel pike(Leave car on NT campsite, safe).

But if you want a slightly shorter route go from Seathwaite farm campsite(Borrowdale).(free parking, safe)

But if you want an even shorter route go from Wasdale(NT campsite).(or park just past it free, safe).

Happy camping

Hello Diddy

Maybe we are trying to be a bit too ambitious, climbing England hightest peak AND carrying our house etc.

Any suggestions for a similar plan somewhere else in the lakes, but maybe less of a height

Also !! no doubt the mountain will be packed with people over a JUly weekend, OK if you get into trouble I suppose, but if you want to do a 1-night wild camp, maybe less beneficial.

We're from Newcastle and daughter coming up from BIrmingam, so the lakes seemed the obvioys choice.

For the past 3 years we camped and walked up Ingleborought, although of course not backpacking. All that was after a Christmas Day Challenge I gave them, which turned out to be a great idea.

Is there a suitable 2-day walk with'house' in Noirth Yorshire, that would maybe be better for the backpacking novics that we are.

REgards !

hello wbmkk

how about parking at the pub( the woolpack inn) which is along the hardknott pass.they will let you if you ask,and have a beer there.if not there are carparks along there.there is a path behind the pub which takes you up to eel tarn.if you head roughly northeast you will come to samsons stones(great moss) which is a great place to pitch for the night.then make your way up scafell pike by whatever route you want.then make your way down to sprinklin tarn for another pitch.or any of the other tarns near to eel tarn.i did it with my 10 year old daughter.we did not go up the pike though as it was too much for her,so we did the full circuit and camped at the wasdale campsite then walked back to the pub the next day.

if you have memory map i can send you a route of what we did.

I agree with Ray but i'd go a little further along the road and stay at the Caravan and Camping club site in Boot. Then do the route Ray mentions. You don't have get to the summit of the Scafells, just have a good walk around and get a feel for the area. It's the nicest part of the lakes imho.
