Those test shoes don't look like they have ever seen a trail in anger.

The images were taken before they were used. It's also a first look because we've not had the chance to put much mileage on them.

Jon, you say "The last on recent Berghaus footwear is light years ahead of its older models as well and we found the shoes felt really planted on our fairly typical British feet."

Please describe your feet (width, volume, narrow or wide heel, any other features) and the sentence quoted will become the most valuable part of the review.  At present it might as well be in code.

Fair point. Medium volume, medium width, medium heel, flattish but I use a Superfeet Green footbed which supports the arch a little. Most UK-lasted boots fit my feet reasonably well, Scarpa's general last is a little loose on my heel and all round, Brasher's last is very loose on my heels, Scarpa technical last fits well all round, Salomon ditto, Meindl ditto, Raichle ditto. Lowa a bit flat for my foot.

I think Berghaus has done a good job of making their last a better shape and volume for the UK. Previously it was quite an unsophisticated one, which used to ignore the presence of my big toe with painful results, but I know the company did a lot of research into lasting and came up with their latest designs which seem, to me at least, a lot better.

Having said all that, there's absolutely no substitute for trying a boot properly. It's the only way to check the fit is right for you, which I know is stating the obvious, but it's so easy to get carried away with magazine reviews, set your heart on a particular boot or brand and then find that it simply doesn't work for your foot.

In very general terms, what I'd say is that the latest Berghaus shoes do seem to fit a medium volume, medium width, medium heeled foot better than they did before, so if you've dismissed the brand due to bad fit a few years back, then it may be worth adding it to your 'possibles' list.

Hope that helps
