Hello, been reading the site/forum for some time, and thought I should sign up.
I've been hillwalking/scrambling for quite a while with my dad, as well as doing camping/expedition and occasionally climbing with explorer scouts, friends etc.
Bit of a tall order, but does anyone know of any good hills/routes that can be done in a day and reached with public transport from Glasgow? I'm looking to start doing stuff with friends over the summer holidays. I know what I'm doing, I'm fairly proficient at navigating, and I've got all the kit.
Also, I'm looking to take up climbing seriously, any advice as to how to do that? I was thinking about taking some lessons at the Glsgow Climbing Centre then getting myself onto an outdoor course.
Hi there JR, and welcome to the wonderful mad life of forum OM!Lots of the Scottish lads will be best able to help you here I think. As for the climbing question you seem to have already got that covered there by the looks of it. It is very important to get good qualified instruction, both from courses and perhaps too by the joining of a local climbing club in your area.
You can get a train to Crainlarich/Rannoch/Corrour or a citylink bus to Glencoe. From there you have a choice of 100s of routes. It'll mean an early start/finish though!
Re climbing. If you don't know anyone that climbs, get along to your local climbing wall and i'm sure you'll meet people there. Joining a local mountaineering club is a good idea too. Nothing beats learning with experienced folk.
Bus to Arrochar gives you easy day access to all the Arrochar Alps, including the Cobbler. All the Glasgow to Oban and Glasgow to Campbelltown services pass through Arrochar.
IMHO, the best way of meeting folk to climb and hillwalk with is via a club. See the club list on the Mountaineering Council of Scotland web site.
