How far in advance do people have to book tickets on trains in order to get the best deals ? I much prefer relaxing on a train after a couple of days walking than having to drive several hundred miles home. Does this ever cause problems as to not being flexible of where to go ? ie could really bad weather in the lakes and nice and pleasant on dartmoor for example or the other way round.

Hello Sam,

the www.thetrainline.com  have e.mail alert for when the cheap fares are bookable.

For going to the lakes www.virgintrains.co.uk  book about 6 weeks in advance, look for value advance. I've started doing more short trips using the cheap fares, see the windy thread for the latest i've planned for Nov.

you can always get off before your scheduled stop and go explore somewhere unexpected if the weather bothers you.

There's always mobitix, tickets to Manchester from Euston sometimes for as little as £3, and it's not expensive to get into the Peak from there:

Threads like this make me appreciate how lucky i am. My planning consists of looking out the window. My nearest hills are within walking distance, and the nearest munro is 30-40 mins drive away.

You can book 12 weeks in advance on the trainline.com and National Rail websites. National Rail is more for finding train times and fares as they push you to someone like trainline or the train company to pay for the tickets.

I bought our tickets back from the lakes (Ulverston) to Derby for Sep 20 today at a cost of £17.00 each. I think that's a good price. Standard fare is £51.50 each.

When we went to Devon 2 years ago, September again, it was about £17 each down and about £18 for the return.

Apart from the occasional (!!) rail works (WCML etc) it makes for a more relaxing  trip.

I didn't say i haven't walked in other countries Michael. Just not south of the border.  Why would i want to walk on a flat bog though?
