Ouch - it started like another selfish climber report and then got decidely nasty if even 10% of the report is true

Sad, but reflective of  the more $ driven big climbing personalities kicking around these days unfortunately

I've been following the real resuce story via Basecamp. A story which sadly seemed to have been ignored by the news organisations after the initial Doom and Gloom report

That feminist 'opinion' writer wants a kick up the arse. Nothing wrong with a well thought out feminist opinion but that wasn't one.... never heard of K2, fine, but clearly no understanding of the concept of climbing a mountain, and either no attempt at any background research or a complete willingness to ignore it if it didn't suit her 'opinion'. Perhaps she should google 'Julie Tullis' and google 'Alison Hargreaves' and then re-write her piece?

Unfortunately there didn't seem to be anywhere on the article to add a comment to that effect.

I'd agree with giving the opinion writer a kick up the arse! I'm female and I climb things because they are there and i can, admittedly nowhere near the size of K2 though (more like boulders usually...)! She claims to be a feminist - well then she should be saying "come on girls, why was it only men on that mountain?" not "aren't men stupid! we women are clever enough to just stay home and do the laundry and not risk having our children lose their mother"

Maybe the journalist should just Google 'Cecilie Skog'.

Krakauer's "Into Thin Air' was an avoidable publication. He would never have written it had the 1996 Everest debale not occured. And yes, there were clients on this latest K2 Tragedy.

He might not have written a book but he was there mainly because he was writing a magazine article about the commericialisation of Everest. And I'm sure there's a hell of a lot of books that wouldn't have been written if X event hadn't happened. Just think how much emptier the history section of the library would be if someone smothered Hitler at birth...
