Hi, this is my first post here.

Looking for a bit of advice, in around 3 weeks i'm heading to south west africa, Namibia and South Africa, and am not really sure what kind of gear to take.
I'm going for 20 days, the first 10 of which will be an organized overland trip, after that me and a friend will be making our own way from southern Namibia down to Cape Town.
Neither of us have ever done a trip like this and so are not entirely sure what to take with us.

the first 10 days is just camping in anything down to -2 degrees so might be looking to get a down bag for this trip but other than that am pretty clueless as to how to prepare for a trip like this.

if anyone has any tips on what to take or how to prepare for this kind of trip it'd be great to hear for them.

cheers, tom

Dont take to much as most novices do.I done a 9 month overland trip through Africa half of which was on an overland truck ( www.africanadventures.bravehost.com) and took very little,3 of most things,1 warm top 1 waterproof top that sort of amount.

Both Namibia and South Africa make excellent introductions to Africa as there relatively comfortable and easy to travel in unlike most of the continent.

I used a down bag  aswell.

most of the time it will be pretty hot, although it can get quite cool at night especially in the desert.

If this was me returning to this area clothing wise I would take (including wearing):

  • 1x shorts
  • 1x convertable trousers (zip off legs to make shorts).lightweight.
  • 2x t-shirts
  • 1x long sleeve shirt
  • 1x midweight fleece
  • underwear/socks
  • 1x sunhat
  • lightweight waterproof jacket

some people i know would say that this list is exessive.

which company are you using for organised part of this trip?
