if dogs don't sweat why do they need breathable fabric coats?

 Initially I thought that if they were already wet, then you put the coat on them, they might get all steamy.
But it then ocurred to me that all the dogs I've had wouldn't give a damn!
I can see the point of something to kep the wind / rain off in extreme conditions, but breathable? Not sure it makes any sense.

 My pup has had a SARDA spec , cordura & pile coat for years , soft shell ? Buffalo for dogs, it's got reflective strips and d- rings , attachments for light sticks etc top kit...................WOOF !

 Seeing as most dogs have a habit of rolling something really smelly, at least you can just hose the coat off rather than the dog.

That is not decrying the specific purposes of hi-viz for rescue dogs and the excellant point that Darren brought up about washing the coat, rather than the dog after a trip.
Yes it is true that dogs do not sweat, since they have no sweat glads, but if they are to wear a coat for convenience then the looser fitting the better on long haired dogs due to the fact that the lack of air circulation is known to encourage an acceleration of the moulting process.

 As a point of interest I had one of these coats on test for OM and seeing as it was a bit big for Ghyll and also as I wanted to get it fully tested I gave it to a Friend with a Search and Rescue dog in SARDA.
He then took it to a SARDA practice and got some opinions and testing before then testing the jacket over a good few months of hard wear and use. The full report will appear on OM shortley but as a taster .........
The jacket at first was thought to be of little use and over designed HOWEVER, once used and tested it was Thought to be Superb.
Watch this space for more info......
oh and another thoght has popped into my head which is that dog coats are used just as much to keep a dog cool by deflecting the sun and heat as well as some being designed to keep them warm. Anyhow I will shut up until the review is posted which is written by people much more qualified than I to comment

In another thread (missed this one somehow) - my dog's got a rubbish natural coat and howls and whinges when it gets too high a wind chill - he's OK in cold, calm weather, but the wind/wet really gets him. I got him a nice cosy coat, but his head is still open to the elements. What he needs is a hat.
He'll look a right prune in a hat but at least it'll stop the yelping.
