Hello all, I know this is off topic but seems like the right place to ask. I've been searching for another Rohan Strider jacket for years! As a smartish run around jacket I havn't found anything close. I wear clothes pretty hard but it just always looked great. If anyone comes accross one (M), or has grown out of theirs please get in touch! Many thanks, Stefan (No relation to Sarah!) stefan.ah(at)hotmail.com

i would say exactly the same Stefan, i wore mine hard for 4 years and it still looked fantastic. it was the best jacket i've ever had.
mine was stolen in China and i just can't seem to replace it with anything any good. i spent twice as much on a patagonia soft shell jacket and it's rubbish. my email address is williamaj@yahoo.com maybe if enough people lose theirs we could petition Rohan to make us a few more!! maybe we should do it anyway

Rohan have just launched a new stretchy non-laminate soft-shell jacket called the Strata. Looks good (frankly better than the Strider IMHO) and while the price is their usual shade of frightening they have 20% off everything until Sunday which makes it a bit more realistic. Pete.

I picked up a Strider in TKM a couple of years ago, and didn't think too much of it; more of a 'street' item than a hill item, with silly sleeves. I sold it on. Oh; see page 2 of this thread... That Strata looks a much more sensible design, although it still seems to have double cuffs, but maybe they're sensible cuffs, and not the Wizard's Sleeves found on the Strider.

I certainly can't fault them on durability. I've still got a pair of Bags and a Movi (a lightweight polycotton top - basically the Olfio without the filling) that I bought in the early nineties which I'll definitely be wearing this summer. I also bought a Pampas at the time but subsequently exchanged it for something fully waterproof (but not by Rohan). Incidentally, the Bags were Mulberry, the Movi - Aubergine and Amethyst. That was before the new management's 'any colour as long as it's taupe' policy. Yes, they're pricey - but, perhaps good value. I've bought pairs of outdoor trousers less than half the price of Bags, but they've only lasted 3-4 years at most. I'm not complaining about my most recent Rohan purchase. November last year I bought a pair of Winter Goas - invaluable during this record cold winter - and only £4.50 at the PDSA shop in Colchester.

I am sorry, I have just won the battle on Ebay for a large Strider jacket. I have a pair of Rohan Goas , they have or had a button instead of a popper. I gave up after I return a pair when the button fell off.

Why apologize? You can't cheat on eBay. I take it you weren't bidding for either of the two pairs of convertible Goas then. I was just looking at an earlier post about the history of Rohan/the Howcrofts etc. I didn't know about this but it does explain a lot. Even through the quarterly brochures (which they later stopped!) I noticed what I could only describe as a 'change of philosopohy' around 94/95 time. The charming eccentricities of earlier Rohan (the great names - Caradhras, Anduin, Rush; the snazzy colours) were replaced by a grey, corporate, 'suity' mentality - sheer anathema to a aging hippie! This was when Monochrome Major was PM, after all. I felt the company was being run by people who didn't particularly care for the outdoors, because it would mean time spent away from their air-conditioned krautmobiles.

I did request some more fun colours on the Rohantime forum. The chief designer, Tim Jasper, pointed out that for current production runs the minimum order size makes some of the more... "interesting" ones unlikely to sell in sufficient quantities . Shame, my faves are the red ones. The chap who runs the Rohan shop in Kewsick has a collection of oldstuff including a colour wall of Bags... (the pink, yellow and emerald are on loan from me!)

Wow, Peter! That's got me coming over all nostalgic. Are you sure the green ones are called 'emerald' and not 'jade'? I had a Pampas in graphite and jade. Second on the top row are mulberry - I've got a pair in that colour - and, I believe, bottom right are in sky. Many thanks. That's my new desktop background sorted for this month, anyway.

I used to have a pair of jade Bags, and the emerald is much more of a grass green. It doesn't really come out too well in the snap above though. My Hot/Winter Bags are Mulberry, and with the colour reproduction the pair next to my pink shorts could either be red or mulberry. Pete.

Hi Can anyone recommend an alternative to Rohan Snowline trousers. I wear them everyday at work and although I haven't worn out any they are getting a bit tired. The main problem I find is my leg length needs to be at least 34" I also like the elastic in the waist as mine is not as stable as it used to be!? cheers Jon
|
 |
You can take them to a local alteration/repair service and get the elastic replaced. My local place does that at £8 a pair, which compared to the cost of a new pair of trews is often (but not always) worth it. If the Snowlines are the ones with a warm liner then the Winter Bags may do similar. They have a 36" leg to turn up to suit. But they don't have an elasticated waist. Pete.

Hi I have six pairs of rohans and none of them need repairing as yet. I don't like the bags fit very much and wondered if there was a non-rohan alternative that has the same warm liner that rohan use, is hard wearing has an elasticated waist and is long in the leg. cheers Jon

May be worth looking at the Craghoppers offerings on their website they do a pair of lined winter trousers.
