Christmas Cracker Six - Gorillapod
The bonkers-looking answer to those times when you need a rock steady camera, but can't carry a tripod, and even if you did, there's nowhere flat enough to stand it. Neat :-)

It is a good bit of kit isn't it. I only have a little one too though!

(Stands back, and awaits rude jokey comment from either Mike, Frum, CB, ID, Diddy, NPC, FB, Metric, Parky, DW, B, G, Matt, Ed, etc etc etc)

As opposed to owning the next model up in the Gorillapod range is what I'm meaning there, ok!

I'm actually hung like a ...........if truth be known upon the matter!

I was merely going to say,.... horse thief in the old west......so don't be alarmed!

I got a Gorillapod SLR for Xmas a couple of years ago.  There's no way on Earth it'll hold my SLRs.  It is, however, useful: when I'm photographing wildlife at night I use it to put a slave flash in a tree, to throw some light down on the subject (to give it a moonlit look).  As can be seen here:

That's interesting Parky - it's absolutely hopeless with mine.  With the Canon 5D it's not even worth trying, and with one of the smaller SLRs like a 450D it still struggles.  Maybe mine's a bit duff?

Anyway, it still serves a useful purpose, holding the flashgun on tree branches etc.

it's a handy thing to have. i wouldn't like to attach my d80 to a post or something like that with it though. as an emergancy tripod it's fine. (the Angel quite unreasonably draws the line where holiday packing goes). i never thought of using it with a flash though so a good tip there michael.

My (small size) gorillapod is hopeless even with a compact. If I'm not carrying a proper tripod then I go back to my trusty Ultrapod - much simpler and much better imo.
