Lads' Mag Ridicules Dead Everest Climbers
FHM has run an article sneering at climbers who've died on Everest and to make matters worse, the author of the article is a journalist working for a national outdoors magazine...

I find this astonishing. I can see that non-mountaineers view climbing as an ultimately pointless pursuit, but to ridicule dead mountaineers is incredibly tasteless and surely goes beyond the bounds of decency.

For it to have been written by a Trail journalist just leaves me incredulous.

I assume that Trail allows their writers to do freelance articles for other magazines. Unfortunately such articles, if they are to be published, seem to have to be cynical and sensationalist.

Piers Pickard must have seen £ signs and ignored any sense of decency he may have once displayed. Let’s hope that his fellow Trail writers feel the same as we do.

I have expressed my disgust to the editor of Trail magazine. I hope they sack him.

Given how Trail has become more of a "lads mag" over the last year, it's not that surprising that one of their journalists has written something like this. For the article to be written by someone who will never be able to attempt the physical endurance required by Everest is akin to the football 'fan' shouting "you f**king w*nker" at a professional footballer for missing a shot on goal. It's a lot easier to slag someone off than trying to acheive your dreams.

I don't buy FHM as I stopped m@sturbating years ago, However I "used" to get Trial (deliberate spelling mistake) but now that's £3.10 to charity every month.

anyone got an e-mail addy for trail?, might be an idea to let them know what our thoughts are, to be honest, I gave up reading the newspapers a while ago, many jounalists are, I feel, more like gossip mongers these days, get a few facts, dress them up a bit to make it sound more interesting, then add large amounts of bullshit to fill the gaps!!, much is written about crap which is unimportant, to entertain rather than inform or educate, which is what a newspaper should be doing, if folks decide not to buy Trail because of this, might be an idea to let them know

thank god you guys feel the same. I hope Piers does the only honourable thing he will ever do and resign. Until that day I am cancelling my subscription and as long as he continues to contribute to trail i will not be buying that rag.
I also suggest a tactic that has been employed by Greenpeace amounst others and you basically spam Proctors address at trail until he prints an aplogy for his emplyees conduct and Packard is dismissed.

I can't believe someone who supposedly understand Trail readers would be so two faced to write such a thing.

Problem is, Trail may not be able to sack him as he was probably writing freelance so they can claim that the views of its journalists expressed outside of the magazine do not reflect the policy of the magazine.

Still should go though...

oh, and another thing. It is understandable for someone who knows nothing of high altitude mountaineering to make 'jokey' comments like those made by Packard. But he DOES know better.
He wrote a deliberately hurtful and spiteful article, which he must have known would cause offence, purely to appepal to the kind of people who read(?) FHM, therefore he did it for the money.
There are very few things lower in the world than a hack journo. He really does give a new meaning to the phrase 'gutter journalism'.
Well Packard, I hope you got your 30 pieces of silver, spend them wisely.

His actions have now brought Trail magazine into thorough disrepute. Surely that is grounds for dismissal?

I was just thinking that. I think for Trail to dismiss him for his work for another magazine could surely be classed as unfair dismissal.

Deffo agree he should go after writing that though.

I presume his employers are Emap and therefore he may have been 'told' to write an article for FHM?

Email sent to Guy Proctor.

Vile, utterly vile. Pickard should 'hang' metaphorically for writing that crap.

there is writing an informative, enjoyable article about the dangers and excitement of high altitude mountaineering for people who know nothing of and have no real interest in the subject and then there is the penning of several thousand words that amount to little more than libel. The way i read it Packard implied that Mal had died as a result of masturbating.
If what he wrote is found to be libel then there are valid grounds for his instant dismissal.
