Nice looking stuff, but Bah! to them for not going for a wired hood on the Torq!

Pete.

I'm not sure what that's all about, the hood peak is laminated, but it's not particularly stiff. I'll try and find out what the thinking behind it is, unless it's some sort of production issue, but that seems unlikely. Interesting that it's made in Canada rather than the far east.

We were discussing these questions recently here:

Going by Tom V's info, it's Westcomb that are making these Torq jackets; and I stand by my original thoughts that I wouldn't trade in my Flak Jacket for one of those (though I'd retrofit a Riri zip if I could !)

I wonder if the hood thing is a vestige from coming from a North American manufacturer as many of the brands over there don't do wired hoods...

And Jon, I read on another forum that someone with a Plasma did subject it to continuous rain and it held it's ground very well... I'd be cautious as you say, but if the hood design works then it should be OK...

I found the reference to using the Plasma in wet conditions...
it was Henrik who said it worked for him...

Interesting. I guess, if you're prepared to be careful, then that's all well and good. I was thinking of the proper torrential stuff that always finds its way down your neck, but on top of that, the secondary issue is that if down does get wet, on your body or in your pack, it loses the bulk of its insulation value very quickly because the surface tension of the water simply overcomes the ability of the down to loft. Synthetic fillings are less efficient wet than dry, but still better than sodden down by some distance.

For wet snow, I'm sure the Plasma would be spot on, those are the sort of conditions it's intended to work in. For proper rain in close to zero conditions, which does happen, I'd be a little wary. Ideal if you get caught out by a shower on the way back from the pub though

It occurs to me that we should have mentioned Crux's sizing in the article. It's very much aimed at fit, lean, climbing types, and the Flak Pants in particular - at least the early ones we have - are quite sleek. I have a 31" waist and 32" inside leg and need a large, normally I'm a text book medium in legwear, sometimes a small. I guess they may have changed the cut since the first batch, but I'd definitely try before buying even if you're normally a standard issue size.

I'd kind of agree about the Flak v Torq as well. The Riri zip seems great, but I'd rather stick with slightly tougher fabric and a wired hood. I too was wondering about the North American influence on that peak. I suspect that for helmet use it won't be an issue, but without a lid, I'll be interested to see how it stands up to UK nastiness.

The Plasma has a 20d lining - could it be used over a wet coats like a belay jacket (without affecting the downs performance)?

Sorry all, just caught up with this. The point that Crux wants to make is that the Torq Jacket is designed to target a more summer/alpine market than a winter/Scottish one which the Flak already caters for. The features were therefore created with this in mind.

Regarding availability of the Plasma Jacket and Halo Top, these are in the following retailers at present:

Snow & Rock V12 Lakes Climber Up & Under Hopefully a wider retail list next year.

I think I may have found the sweet spot...

I recently acquired a sample of the crux shok using the old flak hood and the same fabric as the torq. It's around the 500g mark but I've got to get the proper scales out...

So... a jacket with an excellent wired hood, riri zips and a midweight highly breathable eVent fabric.

Lucky me!

Shame that they won't be in the shops like this... but the new shok & flak have even better hoods than the old flak and a tougher fabric so they are certainly at the hardcore end of the market!

Oh... and I also got to 'fondle' the new version of the Halo top which is a beauty. It has the more commonly seen horizontal baffles but is an incremental step forwards in quality over the original Halo (that I've used a lot!).

I finally got round to sticking the hybrid shok/torq on the scales... and it came out at 480g.
