But will they be putting the XA pro running instep support in these boots or leaving more traditional like most other boots because I had trouble sorting out my XA's to get them comfortable. Having said that, now they are sorted they are excellent. And these do look interesting. Wonder what weight a pair of size 12's will be?

where can i get a pair from?

The shoes are fantastic but I gave up on them as the soles/heels wore out too quickly. The wearing down of the heels caused problems for my pronation (and thence my knees) which the shoes were supposed to be very helpful for - in the end they caused more problems as the wearing down was gradual and not visible to me but very obvious to my physio's trained eye. After knee ligament problems when wearing them. If the booties have the same material for the sole (which it looks like they have) then they will be brilliant - for a short while....just for a short while. All IME

Hmm, from Salomons marketing spiel: 'can be used for trekking, backpacking and hiking.' XA Pro 3Ds are not much use IME on wet transverse slopes (mud, rock, grass or snow), when the waffle pattern soles just slip sideways - more 'Cantgrip' than 'Contagrip' ... so the addition of an ankle cuff is unlikely to improve matters, surely ?

My Elios boots are ok - not as grippy as my inov8 shoes, but they last a helluva lot longer..! Nice and comfy, fairly light on the feet. I did 30 miles in them at the weekend, and they did get a bit warm but that'll be the goretex liner I expect. I'm doing another 30 miles in them tomorrow. I don't anticipate any problems. Due to the fairly rapid wear of my inov8s, and budgetary constraints, I'll probably have to wear my Elios boots for next month's Fellsman, hence the fairly high mileages over the next couple of weeks. So I thought it would be wise to get used to them again!

I recently obtained a pair of the Cosmic 4D GTX and was REALLY very impressed. The sensifit technology taken from the XA Pros ensures a really snug fit. The boots also have an excellent lace locking system so using a 'surgeons knot' is not necessary. I first tested these scrambing. The 4D Chassis proved an absolute treat when it came to get grip on the outer boot. This is because unlike the running shoe, the chasiss runs the full length the boot, giving good torsional stiffness as well as strengthening the outer sole, making them ideal for this purpose. For those of you concerned about wear of the sole, Salomon use a different contragrip for the boot, they have a 'Running Contragrip' for the shoes. But, on polished rock and small foot holds they gripped remarkably well. Although only time will truly tell how well they wear. With regards to instep support, they answer is yes the Cosmic has it. This was no issue for me, but then we are all different. That combined the neat heal counter that the 4D Chassis helps to create made the boot very comfortable and supportive. I really enjoyed them, they've far exceeded my expectations, hopefully you will too....

....... "and of course I have nothing whatsoever to do with Salomon! My user reviews are always peppered with flowery markeing prose" . Or is the old cynic in me exerting too much influence?

Contragrip? Does that mean you fall off?

These look interesting, mainly due to liking lightweight boots and having XA pros for around 4 years. At the moment I have a pair of Scarpa Rangers and although they are nice they seem a little heavier and hotter than my (admittedly lightweight esk) North Face boots (that broke after a year, and whose soles were almost gone in that time...). It'll be interesting to see how long these last (I have a habit of breaking boots ).

I've got a pair and really like them. Wore them straight out of the box on a backpacking trip and suffered no problems. Waterproof enough to survive a thunderstorm, really nice cushioning in the sole and good stiffness to give support round the ankle and the arch but without feeling hard like some of the other lightweight boots. I bought them to replace a pair of ZG65s that I've never got on with and really happy. I'm not sure they'll last many years, maybe the quests will last longer with the suede on the upper. The fit is narrowish but not as much as I was expecting, I'd say similar to a meindl sofline but with a bit more volume over the foot (i have narrow low volume feet) so I might stick a reducer in after my superfeet. And I don't work for salomon!

So how is the sole wearing ben ? I agree with what Ninja Pussy Cat says above - the shoes are brilliant really snug and comfy but I've worn mine for a year (not every day) and the soles are wearing right down !! was shocked to see and they are really expensive shoes as well...
Please someone report back before i;m tempted and make an expensive mistake.. cheers guys

hm. The XA Pros are trail running shoes, designed for close control and aggression - like Inov8 roclites, just less aggressive. Makes sense that the sole isn't going to be all that tough given their intended use. Surely Salomon wouldn't be so thick as to put the same sole unit on their walking boots - which are actually supposed to last a good few years...

I wore these boots on a 30-day, 280-mile off-trail backpack tacross Iceland in 2009. They were fantastic, and easily supported my feet under the weight of a 40-lb pack. I suffered just two minor blisters. The major drawback is that the boots' uppers are not tough enough to withstand repeated abrasion from rocks, especially the volcanic variety found in Iceland. After two weeks, they started tearing, and lost their water resiliency. If that's not a concern, these boots are highly recommended.

The post is really good and the boots are simply good. i have been using the boots since two months and it is really doing good lets see what will happen next.
