Hi all, I'm off to Nepal in september to trek upto Everest Base Camp, I'm in the process of putting my kit list together and was wondering if anyone has been there at this time of the year before and could offer some advice on which rating of sleeping bag I would need for early September, we will be staying in Tea Lodges.

Thanks in advance

Gary

Hi at the end of your walk its cold cold cold. So take the best sleeping bag you can get. along with a good insulated sleeping mat. remember you will be spending a lot of time in your tent at night so make yourself as comfy as you can. Getting off the plane the temp is ok but the further you go up to base camp the colder it gets and there is nowhere to go to get warm.Even in the tea houses its cold. Also remember to take high sun block some of my mates got badly blistered lips thru not putting sun block on quickly enough. Good sun or skiing glasses are also recomended.  We walked thru snow, and a snow storm it can hurt your eyes. I stayed in some of the tea lodges and some of the rooms were like wooden packing crates. If you had electric you were doing well, a lot dont have electric. central heating was a small dung heater in the middle of the main room. Which was not a lot of good as every time a porter came in, which they did often, they left the door wide open. Daylight hours the cold is not so bad but when the sun goes down it gets cold cold cold.  Still a brilliant walk though, Do it again any time, but would take more cold insulated clothing with me the next time.  Hope this helps.

Done it twice.

Its pretty cold in the evening from Namche onwards so get a warm bag(4 season). A down jacket makes the evenings alot more pleasant . Other than that its just stuff you'd wear here that is adaptable from Autumn to Winter temps.

The lodges are suprisngly plush when you think how far the materials have come by foot. Some are alot better than others. They are pretty much basic hotels for the 1st half of the walk.

It starts getting cold and the lodges turn more into tea house after Pheriche . Rooms are simple ply walls so you are in effect sleeping in a big unheated barn when is minus 20 outside at night

If your trekking in from Jiri then its quite tropical in temp for the 1st week.

Cheers for the replies/advice, I've got the down jacket and I'm planning on taking a 4 season down bag so I should be alright!

what do you do about charging your camera battery up there in the tea houses, esp as the cold (I have been told) drains the battery life quicker?

thanks,

most tea houses will charge your battery if they've got solar power. cant remember the costs(i took film) a couple of quid i think .

ah brilliant, thanks for that!  Was a little concerned.  the solio won't charge my lumix tZ4 so I was a bit miffed, only just brought it and didn't want to have to reinvest in another!

did you enjoy your trip?

Fantastic!  I love the lumix, just upgraded from my fujifilm S5700 as it was too bulky, found that out in the beacons a month or so ago!

Have a fantastic time!  Are you on the livefortheoutdoors.com forum site?  You must post photos!
