My old French teacher used to refuse to have his fish and chips wrapped in the Sun!

Ireland is always a favourite destination of mine when money is tight. Flights are silly money at the moment, and you'll find some lovely independent hostels with private rooms if you don't want to camp. I can usually find lovely quiet spots as well - the Ireland of Inisheer for instance, or some of the little bays in County Donegal. The Beara Peninsula is next on the list though.

Well we've embraced our inner chavster and have been collecting the Sun 'Holiday for £9' tokens! So far we've claimed a week on the Somerset coast, and are waiting for confirmation of our western Brittany choices. If you start collecting the tokens now you could bag yourself a trip pretty much anywhere in Europe , including alpine areas. Google 'Sun Europe Holidays'. You don't have to stay on the caravan/campsite after all - we'll certainly be out and about every day. I must admit that buying the Sun for the first time in my life was an experience though - I had to hide it away before leaving the shop Hayley
Last year the Times did an article on these holidays and the verdict was that they are fine .....................just remember to take the Staffs
Ok I'm probably demonstrating extreme ignorance here but who or what is Staffs?!
We're going to look upon the holidays as an 'experience', to try and lessen the pain
Oh dear Hayley are you sure you're doing the right thing? Staffordshire bull terrier. A pair is compulsary
Oh gawd, please don't say that! We decided that if it really is unbearable then we'll pack up and go find a local B&B. From a people watching perspective it could indeed be very interesting, to say the least
If it's any consolation we have 2 weeks every year in a caravan at Camber sands, my son loves it. He wants to live in one forever
and Hayley, if you're not sure what to pack, just one outfit is required. A pink velour tracksuit with `LUSCIOUS' on the back of the trousers and a large gold chain with ` BABES' on it. Sweet.

I'd consider Spain's Sierra Nevada. Flights are cheap, Ryan Air to Granada and cheap busses either to the ski resort or Lanjaron.
Once you've walked up high there are quite a few unmanned huts that are free and several "natural" refuges under boulders.
The mountains are high and a lot of time can be spent above 3000m. Only at the "honey pots" will you come across many people. I had a 6 day walk traversing the range last year and only saw other people on 2 days. Fabulous.
some info can be found here: http://www.mountain-house.co.uk

I'd keep it simple...UK....luton or not very far from it There's the Luton Hoo... spa, sleep and life's great!
I don't think £220 per room per night is suitable for the financially challenged . I guess most OM ers could not afford this.
When you've just spent £220 on a new tent... You can only afford wild camping!

There's some great ideas coming out on here. I do have a few long distant paths on my horizon it must be said, the Pennine way being one of them. Mmmmm. Although I did think, oh stuff it, just do the Alps things cheapo cheapo but now I have some really good ideas and I'm torn! I shall think on over my week in Scotland next week hehe. Oh and Mick, nowt wrong with Camber Sands! I used to love it there when I was kid. Happy memories and only a couple of hours of, "Are we there yet", from SE London

I should've said 'of Tenerife'
found cost of living very low - it's cheaper than mainland Spain / the Balearics have done some walking on Mallorca and found Tenerife bigger, wilder, more unspoilt. And an amazing bus service (did I mention that?).

I am currently looking for a good and not too expensive summer holiday. I always book my holidays online because I am of the opinion that it is cheaper than going to a tourist agency. This summer I would love to travel to Europe. I always wanted to visit Italy or Spain. Maybe it is possible to make a tour through europe.

Were going south this year as the lake district is the new trendy place to be. I would like to tell you where but the power of the internet is making it that difficult that all the quite locations are fill up with people who think it is blink to dangle a compass round the neck and a map is to advise people who have got lost where to go. Why don't you try the long distant paths, they take you to varied places and away from the crowds. Keep off the Coast to Coast as that Jul-- Bradbu--- has just killed it with a new TV series. I hope the £ recovers quickly so the trend dies of taking a holiday in this country as it is driving the price up for us poor walkers.

What about non-Euro countries in Europe to avoid the financial pain? The coast of Albania looks fabulous and it also has some lovely mountain areas. Bulgaria - more mountains and still free of the fashion-conscious. Sweden - the krone has also fallen strongly against the Euro, so pound for pound, it's probably as cheap as it's going to be. I think the Guardian or the Observer had a travel article about non-euro countries in the last couple of weeks. Maybe worth checking out for ideas.
