Hi , could you tell me ,if I sponsored some one for this Trek, what percentage of my sponsor money would go to the charity and what percentage would go to pay for someones free holiday?

Not usually a free holiday there Jules in most cases I think you'll find. Most of these things you have to raise the money for the trip yourself! Or at the very least a very large part of it! I've looked into doing a few over the years now, that's how I know; plus have had various friends do them to Kili and to Macchu Pichu in Peru etc.

I know that many of these trips the sponser money pays for a big chunk of the trip not you own hard earned cash. That may or may not be the case here which is why I asked the question.

Its a fair question, I am just waiting for the answer.

What do they mean by " raise the money your self"

Do they mean " save up out of you wages every month till you have enough"

Or do they mean " get £2000 worth of sponser money and the trip is free to you"

Sometimes its a combination of the two, you might have to put in a few hundred but not the full cost of the trip.

I just want to know, if I hand over my tenner how much does the charity get?

Hi Jules

The percentage for these treks varies, from about 25 to 50% depending on the trip and its location. EBC is a long haul flight, a longer trek because of acclimatisation, and fairly high (but not exceptional) ground costs, so it's at the top end of this - about 50% costs and 50% to the charity. We ask the participant to pay £500 in registration in this case, which offsets some of this, and usually participants will pay some more of the costs themselves as the fundraising dictates.

I view these things as a win win ... there's no doubt the challengers get a trip of a lifetime, and experience something they would probably not otherwise do, but the charity raises money it would not have otherwise received. Benefit all round. My only criteria would be that a trip (like this one) is a genuine personal challenge worthy of sponsorship, which EBC certainly is.

I have not does EBC myself but I have done 5 treks for charity, and raised about £20k in total. I wouldn't have done that fundraising work without the incentive of the challenge, so it is genuine "incremental" money for the charity.

This EBC trek is for RP Fighting Blindness, my earlier work was for Mencap. RPFB is running thier very first trek (to the Sahara) this month and will raise about £35k after costs. Mencap have been doing them for 10 years and raised millions.

Hope this gives you some insight, if you want more details of the budgets email me separately at david <at> brps <dot> org <dot> uk

Also, of course, if your tenner is added AFTER the ground costs have been met, then all of your money is going to the charity! If someone exceeds their fuindraising target, then as an overall percentage the ground and flights costs fall.      David

Thanks for your prompt and honest reply.

I will pass on this one thanks.

If I want to give money to a charity I would rather give all of it to the charity.

I did the Welsh 3000 a couple of years ago and every penny I raised went to the hospital in africa and my own very low costs i paid myself.

If I want to do a holiday like this then I will save up and pay for it myself and I have no desire to fund other peoples holidays.

ACtually, the first post should have read

>>Visit EBC this year, see the latest charity challenge at
>>[url=http://www.trektofightblindness.org.uk]www.trektofightblindness.org.uk

ie its .org not .co

Sorry!

David
