Rather lucky guy! Seems a bit foolish to go standing near where a cornice might be though (I'll probably get loads of stick for saying that now...). But glad everything turned out ok.
Very lucky escape, glad to hear he's in one piece too. But how must the poor people he was leading have felt! Probably a bit of a *gulp* 'right then...what do we do now then?' moment!
There was a case just like that featured in a survival tv show from a few years ago back too, where an avalanche swept the two guides away, leaving the students to rescue them!
> Stob Coire nan Lochan is not one of the Three Sisters by the way!!!!
True, but it's at the 'back' of them, and is usually approached from Coire nan Lochan, which is the valley between two of the Sisters; Aonach Dubh, and Gearr Aonach.
I was in Glencoe over the weekend, and left on Monday morning. The snow I saw was in very poor condition; grainy and very wet (more like Slush Puppy). Whilst there had been a light dusting overnight, it was raining when we left, and I don't think there would have been a hard frost in the tops. Glad to hear this chap survived.
Just so glad he survived that. There has been so much bad news lately. Just goes to show even more the necessity for leadership, training, preparation, and the right equipment. Natural conditions are no respecter of persons, and it is always a tactical balance between what the conditions can throw at you and the readiness for and awareness of the dangers out there. You can break a leg just hopping over a small stream in Summertime conditions, as someone I know did!
