Mick, If weather suitable, a long dip in the Fairy Pools is not to be missed. We went in three, one after the other. Really warm - and what a backdrop! Midges started to appear mid May - I reckon the first two weeks are the very best time to be there. May see you then - vague plans afoot...

Im looking for a cottage for two weeks on Skye in August but it is not turning out cheap . Anybody know any really nice ones that would not cost £1000 for two weeks?? Not bothered where on the Island.

Midges in mid-may? oo-er, can't get there til at least third weekend that month. The midgie headnet will definitely get some use, then!

We went in May. Even sat in a parked car they were crawling through the mirrors and under the rubber seal on the windows to get in. It's the women midges that do it you know. They bend over backwards to get close to you, then they do nothing but suck your blood, irritate the hell out of you and then leave you with a nasty rash.

i last went in mid may. drove half way down glen etive one afternoon planning to leave the car and head out. got out of the car, had just enough time to notice that the front bonnet was black with midge corpses, that the licence plate wasn't even visible, and then they pounced.... never again. really hoping to get the last week of april off for a quick tour though

Anyne know what the midges are like on Harris in May? Or other times, for that matter? Are they as voracious as their Inner Hebridean mates?

Anyne know what the midges are like on Harris in May? Or other times, for that matter? Are they as voracious as their Inner Hebridean mates? May, especially early May, the midges aren't biting. Harris is a bit windy so great for blowing them into the sea.
The midges were out this week in the NW Highlands but at this time of year there are only a few and they don't bite.

Quite a few midgies out on Friday night due to the warm spell, but as Lindsay said, they weren't biting. I think they only start feeding when the female midge is incubating eggs, and needs a blood meal.
