Hi I'm just starting out and looking for a tent to carry in my backpack when hiking/trekking or in my panniers when cycling.  The main issue being that I want a tent that's not too heavy less than 3kg and not too expensive, less than £100.  I've had a look around and it's a minefield-I don't know enough...please help!!

Welcome to OM forum there Andrea.

You could try a Vango tent, would most likely suit you ok.

A bit more roomy this one.

If you can bend your budget a wee bit, Lightwave are doing a solo 4 season tent, the T0 Trek XT, in their clearance for £125 (+VAT and P&P) which is half price.   I don't know if they have any left.

 Link Here

It depends on what you mean by 'roomy' but it's sub 2kg and has a porch the size of a house.

I use the non-XT version (same tent, tiny porch) and I love it. Takes a right battering. If I didn't already have one I'd have jumped at the clearance offer.

The clearance G1 ionix is also worth a look; a bit more money, a bit more weight (just over 2kg), but for one person its like a 5 star hotel in terms of roominess and comfort.

Andrea,

My 'second opinion' is in agreement with the good Doctor above. Though these lightwave clearance prices aren't quite as impressive as the previous batch, they still offer an awful lot of quaility for the price. I have a t2 cylq which is about 2.2kg and plenty of room for two. The t1 is big enough for two for overnighters and the t0 is a generous solo. My t2 fits inside my old Karrimor panniers so anything smaller should be fine.

You didn't really say how many people will be using this tent; if it's solo you'll easily stay under your 3kg and could go as low as 1kg (but not for that price bracket).

Andrea what season usage are you planning all year round or summer only? as this could effect any choices on tents.

One good place to look is at the Quechua tents in Decathlon.  They can be extremely light and roomy.  They probably won't stand up to severe mountain weather but they're cheap and decent quality.

I've just bought the Vango Spectre 200 for £50. I know a company called Kendal Camping have some blue ones in clearance for £50. The Banshee is supposed to be quite cramped.

Lightwave clearance is a good idea but you do have to be quick as they get posted on the bargain thread and disappear quite quickly.

Vango do some ultralight tents and the spirit range or the Force10 sub-brand version which is lighter is also good. Might be over your budget though, but you won;t get a sub2kg tent for £100, however a 3kg tent is possible for £100. I am guessing you are looking for a 2 man if you are thinking of up to 3kg weight.

Field and Trek do some tents cheaply at the mo and for a long time as they are now a cheap and cheerful budget place now. Not a Cotswold type of place like it used to be.

One more thing, if you know a teacher into the outdoors they might be able to get 20% off for you at Cotswold. Cotswold offers 20% off for DoE'ers and you are likely to find one in most schools these days, but keep that to yourself Andrea.

Wow you guys really know your stuff-great advice so far will spend some time looking at the options you have suggested-really looking for a tent that does everything, is cheap and 3-4 season.  Oh and I am a teacher so will check out the Cotswold offer!!

Oh and I do need a 2 man tent - my partner is 6'2" and I want space for 2 large rucsacks and maybe panniers too so hence a bit of storage and sleep space needed!
