went around the stubai alps, neustift region of austria august 2008. anyone have any suggestions for other austrian areas/regions. money being an issue i think the huts in austria being so cheap means it's a case of sticking within that country. cheers aldousjohn@hotmail.com
Mayrhofen makes a fantastic base for all sorts of activites in the Tirol, including access to the Hintertux Glacier. It's easily accessible by train or bus from Salzburg or Innsbruck, and accommodation ranges from hostel to 5*.
take a look at the adlerweg (eagle's way) which covers a range of ability and how you want to do it. adlerweg
just one of many references.
the austrian tourist board is extremely enthusiastic and well organised to get summer visitors and have a range of leaflets/brochures from their site. also take a look at the more specialised summer travel companies brochures for some ideas too.
Obergurgl (not far from where they found 'Otzi' the 3.000 year old bloke) has sheep with strange drooping ears (steady on, Horace) I can walk to the Italian border in three hours and not see a soul - bloody great!
Walk up to Ramolhaus (oldest refuge in area, built in 1881 perched on a high ledge at just over 3000m looking down on the Gurgler Ferner) - you can return via glacier and back to Obergurgl on opposite side of valley.
Take bus up to border post at Timmelsjoch and do Hochstubai Panoramaweg to Brunnenkegel Hut, then drop down to Solden to catch bus back up to Obergurgl - long day, but great views along not too exposed ridges.
Loads of long and short days either side of valleys. Paths well marked.
