58 pattern webbing was probably one of the first recent, modular, frame-less designs. The backpack part was just a largish sack for carrying things which made life more comfortable but could be 'left/ dumped if required'. The important 'stuff' was carried on 'belt kit and or yoke', so most of the really heavy weight/ stuff was carried directly on hips !! And it could be heavy!! IIRC, you could be carrying up to 15kg. when "loaded for bear"................ No wonder my knees are wrecked!!!!!!!!!!!

Think most peeps agree that its heaviest at the top and lightest at the bottom,Water damage?Buy good ortleb water bags and take wot you need wen you need it.They wont burst.Plus i dont believe in packin everything in waterproof bags, just buy a good rain cover unless ur river crossin.Mines is built in2 the rucksack,so saves £ on raincover and w-proof bags. The more weight you can save 4 water and food the happier your belly will be on ur trip and a happy belly is a happy trip even if its a wash out... .

just a question: heaviest at the top, and lightest at the bottom sounds sensible for men, who generally have their centre of gravity around the chest/shoulders. but women generally have their centre of gravity around their hips. if packing is meant to stabilise the heaviest weight nearest your centre of gravity, shouldn't women be following the opposite of all this advice? as usual.

HaHa,very thoughtfull(and feminist lol).No just the same hun as you want the weight bearing directly downwards, not pulling your shoulders back or makin you hunch forward. It there4 pushes the weight down towards ur hips even though its at the top if u know wot i mean.Heavy stuff close 2 ur back as poss and near or on top will bear the heaviest weight down towards ur hips close 2 ur body.Tell me if this helps ...John..

If you put the heaviest stuff around ur hips or at the bottom then it would bear the weight past ur hips and towards the ground and you wld walk like ur doin walking squats or something lol and you would lean forward 2 try and compansate,a big No No Hun....x

I dont know how people can handle the heavy stuff at the top method as it always seems to allow the tail to wag the dog, as it were. I feel unstable, any little movement gains lots of momentum to throw me off balance. I much prefer heavy stuff lower down, more like middle to bottom of pack and back.

HaHa 4-1,i'll say no more .Yeah i totaly get wot you guys are sayin, its complex as theres always a kinda mixture of heavy and light.i.e sleeping bag is norm at the bottom 4 me but its quite a heavy object compared 2 other things so that contradicts wot ive been sayin,yep-each 2 there own,but bye heavy at the top i didnt mean EVERYTHING so ur wobblin about like a divvy lol, just in general...John..

Just 1 question though guys(and girls)If you put ur heavy stuff at the middle or bottom, wot do u do if it starts battering down with rain and you want 2 get ur tent out quickly??...John..
|
 |
Some seem to stick their tents out in stretch pokets and things. Seems to require a relatively small tent and/or a big outside pocket that. Otherwise just tent stuff sacks, being long and thin, won't normally go lengthways in a rucksack anyway. So I guess often standing upright and not hard to reach quite quickly. I suppose that while tents are the heaviest things in most peoples packs, they're not especially dense so standing one upright doesn't mess with your balance that much.

My superlite voyager easily fits into the side pockets of my Kestrel 48, same for my comp.
|
 |
Yeah i get ya martin, standing upright wont mean tryin 2 get half way down your pack disrupin your system...

.jpg) John taylor. Why the need to get the tent out early?. You will be in your rain wear anyway.I usually sort the pitch area sticks stones etc. Then I lie the pack on its back open mouth facing the end pole position, this keeps most of the rain out, then I reach in pull the tent pieces out and erect it .Drag the pack around to and the entrance, again open end facing into the tent pull out all its contents straight into the tent, these items never get touched by the rain, and my wet clothing or rucksack never enter the tent.Roll the sack up which is now empty push it in a bin bag and leave in the porch, or outside if its secure.I have the Hillberg Atco the whole procedure takes ten minutes. Cheers Waldo
