Zuma's right about the Bifrost Y6 not really being a viable lightweight. On the one hand it is "only" 12 Kg for 6 people which on a per-person basis is not unreasonable, but "light weight" in this sense does rather imply "(relatively) low bulk". The Y6 comes in its own holdall, which I'd estimate by sight to be around 60 litres or so... You could separate it out to some extent but of course with a family situation you're looking at mum and dad doing the bulk of the carrying and that limits things a bit.
It might be okay from a canoe, bot other than that it's really only for cars. I've seen the H4 suggested on acanoe website as a good canoe touring tent, mind.
Thanks for the other tent-tips btw Zuma, good to find out about stuff not known much in the UK. We might have a serious look at the Birdland next time we're in NL visiting the Dutch half of the family (mevrouw is Nederlandse...)
Pete.
Hi Pete,
Ofcourse when you are cycling (not in hills) or canoe you can drag bigger, heavier tents. But each kg less is aprreciated even when canoeing... It's a matter of what do you find important, price, standing height, weight, sinlge or two inners etc. ( The Terra Nova is very interesting if you really want standing height, it's still being really light weight) I was looking for family tents with two inners and light weight because'I've to drag it in a cart (the rambler explorer) in hills... Therefore I set a limit of 7.5 kg's in my search (it's a limit which is often used by cyclists who are cycling with their family in the hills).
Birdland tents are not avialable in the UK? Strange...
I quite like the Wild Country Trispace, so quick to put up, can squeeze 4 in at a push but three comfortably and lightweight'ish
Wild Country is indeed also a good budget brand for reasonable light weight tents. But agian this is a single innertent model. Not what I'm looking for.
