Im off on holiday to Grindalwald in June. flying out to Geneva. What is the best and cheapest way of getting to Grinlewald form Geneva? Transfers cost a fortune! Thanks

When I went Basel to Lauterbrunnen (close to Grindelwald) I think we bought a Swiss Card which is about £100 but gave us our transfers from the airport to the resort plus 50% off the mountain railways in the area for the duration of our stay. In that area I've found the Jungfraubahn almost vital when just doing day walks. If you dont intend to use the mountain railway, then the cheapest option I could find would have been the Swiss Transfer Ticket which is £75. Seems rather pricey, but I guess its comparable to UK prices, though a much better service. http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/

I would second Ben's recommendation of a Swiss Card. http://www.swisspasses.com/ may be is a slightly cheaper source - £106 at present. Do get the card in the UK as it can take 20 minutes queuing at the Geneva Airport station. There are trains every half hour from the airport to Bern with connections to Interlaken Ost and then Grindlewald. http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en? gives access to the SBB timetable in English. You can be on the train within 30 minutes of landing at the Airport.

I would second Ben's recommendation of a Swiss Card. 50% off a trip to the Jungfraujoch saves over £50 and the 50% savings on buses and cable cars mount up. http://www.swisspasses.com/ may be is a slightly cheaper source - £106 at present. Do get the card in the UK as it can take 20 minutes queuing at the Geneva Airport station booking office. There are trains every half hour from the airport to Bern with connections to Interlaken Ost and then Grindelwald. http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en? gives access to the SBB timetable in English. You can be on the train within 30 minutes of landing at the Airport.

Without looking im preatty sure the swiss card only gives the 50% discount to Klein Schedgg and not on the expensive section from K.S to the Jungfraujoch. I done the tour of the Jungfrau last year at the beginning of July last year and many of the walks in the area such as the Faulhornweg weren,t open until the 1st week of July. Actually im going again this July to do a selection of walks.I will be using the swiss card again.Managed to get a flight with aer lingus to Zurich for £19.98.

Julian, I think you might be right about the Jungfraujoch.
As far as I can remember, the Swiss Card got us from Basel to Lauterbrunnen and back, and got us 50% off our Jungfraubahn Pass (unlimited use of the mountain railways as far as Kleine Scheidegg, or the Eigergletscher just 5 minutes higher up). The Jungfraubahn Pass itself got us the reduced rate on the trip to the Jungfraujoch. Of course, many people don't go up to the Jungfraujoch anyway, it's very much an optional £25 or so.
JK is right about Geneva airport too. The train station is linked to the airport so it's dead easy to catch a train to Bern then onwards to Interlaken Ost and Grindelwald. I personally didn't buy my Swiss Card in advance. It took a few minutes to sort out at Basel station as we had to queue to buy the Card from one desk then queue again at another desk to purchase the tickets (from what I remember). Not a huge hassle if you have a bit of time to play with.

The Swiss Card does give 50% off the Jungfraujoch trip. Apologies for the double post above.

You can actually get these railcards tailored to your needs; so many days, days free travel, days half travel, first class travel at second prices etc. Every Swiss tourist office sells them but you can get them in advance. Although I usually have my car and have driven all over the Oberland on our last trip I didn't use the car from when we arrived in Grind. until we left the following week. Their transport system is brilliant. By the way, the passes also apply on the lake steamers. Very relaxing.

I used the Swiss Card as well on my last summer visit and found it well worth while. Getting the train out of Geneva Airport is great as you don't even go outside. Look carefully at the timetables as you can probably do the journey with only one change. The rail newtwork in Switzerland is wonderful. Edited to say one change to get to Interlaken. Then another train to Gridlewald.

I don't know bout the Swiss card but I recall being able to go anywhere in Switzerland and back on a train ticket for approx £40 but it was only available too tourists!
Failing that a hire car is a good option. Don't forget too spend time in Interlaken.
There is a reasonable sausage and chips in the cafe with the telescope on the veranda up in Grindlewald and a pitcher of beer is the cheapest drinks option a few door up. Have a good one!

Neil is refering to the "Swiss Transfer" ticket. This is great for skiers but the Swiss Card or Half Fare Card are better value if you are going to use public transport (including cable cars, mountain railways etc) during your stay. Shop around - the sbb.ch website does enable you to check fares.

Thanks John, I believe you are quite right mate.
Its worth buying a ticket too the Jungfrau summit and the walking back in front of the North face, you jump off at the last surface station on the way back. It saves a few quid too. Have a nice trip.

Unfortunately if you look on the Jungfrau bahn website as linked by Ben above it does state 50% discount on general J.Bahn network with the swiss card but to receive a discount (of 25%) on the route from Kleinn Scheidgg up to Jungfrau you have to buy the more expensive Swiss pass. I received an e-mail from Grindelwald tourist office yesterday confirming this and also that there is a depressing amount of snow still on the First area (5 ft deep still). They are hoping the snow will be clear by late June early July on the Faulhornweg and Eiger trail routes.Lets hope so!!

..and to make matters more confusing ive just spoken to the swiss travel center in London who have told me 50% discount to K.S and 25% upto Jungfraujoch thus contradicting the local tourist office .

Most interesting, sure Michael will be made up with that info. So will people attempting the North face if there is 5ft of snow. I flew over the swiss alps a week ago, there did seen to be lots of snow about!
Let the train take the strain ha ha So reliable and much more value for money. Love the windows that pull half way down in the carridges too.
