I am planning on doing the Everest Base Camp trek at the very beginning of May. I thought it would be interesting to see the Everest Expeditions during this time.
However, I am unsure of what the weather will be like during the month of May, because I cannot go at any other time.
I wondered if anybody has any experience of doing this trek in May. (not anyother month).
I have done many treks in Nepal in April, but May seems very close to the monsoon season. So I don`t know what the weather is like above 3000 metres during this time. In terms of the views etc.
I wondered is it worth going during this month?
Any advice and peoples experience of trekking during this month of May would be really appreciated.
We were in Langtang this time last year and it was very hazy in the afternoons, similarly on the edge of Kathmandu Bowl couldnt see anything in the distance. You may be disapointed. Plus there is also the chance of snow at higher levels. We were lucky in that the snow we had was earlier on trek, but passes did have a reasonable amount to contend with.
The good (or bad) thing is that it was a pleasant temperature. The next time I go to Nepal I wouldnt go in the spring, and will take my chances with the crowds in November, but then again I dont think I will go anywhere too popular.
A good indicator for the weather is the fact that that Late May is the primary expedition season. i.e. possibility of best weather window .. I have been in Everest area that time of year twice. Can often be a bit wet on and off below Namche, but I found that at the higher elevations the weather was relatively warm and dry; although the visibility/air quality might not be up to that of Oct/Nov. Have done a few other areas of Nepal at that time too and found similar conditions. One bonus is by May the Rhodedendrums and other plant life are in full bloom which is a nice counterpoint to monotone colours in the higher regions.. Good time to go although, I must admit I preferred the Thame/Gokyo/Chakung/Nangpa La valleys to the main Everest Valley due to the amount of Yak/Porter traffic heading to Base camp. It can be like Market St in Manchester on a saturday
As you mentioned you have done many treks in Nepal I have included a couple of options you may or may not be familiar with, that are great diversions from Gokyo, if you want a circular route>
One is the Cho La Pass to Everest valley which has stunning views to ama Dablam but is a long day; or another route that is really great is the Renjo La from Gokyo to Nangpa La valley to Thame ... Both times I did this I saw no-one apart from the odd local for two days..
If you need details of routes or places to stay in Nangpa Vally PM me>
Would have been out there myself if it wasn't for the fact I am now a father and my girlfriend has turned evil
Jealous -- enjoy the journey..whatever you do>>>
View below is from top of Renjo La pass looking over Gokyo towards everest in the clouds..
P. s. You have to be capable in remote mountainous terrain for Renjo La or if not have a guide for a couple of days as it is off the beaten track..>
