My kid is planning to do some travelling in Tanzania this summer with some friends. Does anyone know what the availability of cheap hotels and hostels is like? Any tips would be appreciated.

Don't know the mainland bit Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) worth a visit. Unguja - the main island is much more developed and Stonetown has plenty of guest houses catering to the cheaper end of the market.

Pemba is much less developed but better for diving.

Both are well worth a visit.

Cheap ferries from the mainland to Znz, a vibrant nightlife. Excellent fresh seafood down by the port in Stonetown, all open air and not silly prices.

Did Kili in 2007 and stayed in the aptly named "Kilimanjaro Hotel" at Moshi. This is only a short drive from the entrnce to the Kilimanjaro National Park and was relatively cheap. They  are also experienced in catering for trekkers and the main dining room at the hotel is

full of memoribilia of past trekkers.

They will also be able to provide details of local guiding companies - anybody planning to trek on Kili must use a registered  guide.

We flew into Nairobi and drove across Kenya and Tanzania although I am sure travel into and from Darasalam airport would be just as suitable.

Great experience and great people - well worth the effort.

I found cheap hotels to be plentiful and even some of the expensive safari lodges in the national parks would either let me camp or stay in the staff quarters.I stayed in the staff quarters at serona lodge in the serengetti with the warning not to use the toilets after night fall because of the lions.Lovely place.
