Hi My partner and 1 are dropping out or tuning in (depending on you slant) and backpacking for a year or so. We're going overland by trains from Poland through: Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan ..destination India and probably up to the Himalayas. I'm here to see if you guys had any advice on little things you found were useful on your travels around these sort of places...eg my travel doctor said take those screws with loops in the end for securing mossie nets, string from your local B&Q for all sort os things including hanging up your rucksack if the floor is not suitable for the cochroaches either, heating coil, etc etc..actually can't think of much more but etc etc looks good . So any tips? Cheers Steve

Bungees- the ones with hooks on either end- there is no limit to their usefulness

.jpg) A couple of cable ties, different lengths, as with Simon's bungees, these have a multitude of uses.

 |
What are bungees? Can you send a link to one or 2? Cheers Steve

I have a friend, Chris, who's done a bid of 'out there' travelling in several of those countries. First have a look at his website & read his various stories. Then, if anything raises your interest, I'm sure you could contact him... www.chrisafir.com I've been to India, Pakistan & Nepal and can vouch that there are some widgets that have so many uses. If you're taking a tent, then don't be afraid to use the bits included for other purposes if necessary. I've used tent poles to create a tall tripod over a bed to fit a double mosi net before. (The ceiling was too high to screw in a hook). But don't forget there's almost always a local solution to whatever you are trying to do! Otherwise you'll end up packing the kitchen sink! John

For tips check out the Lonely Planet website, and the travellers forum there called the Thorn Tree, for tips and tricks from folks that have journeyed there before you.
|
 |
The NOMAD travel store website too has packing suggestions lists that might well help you out; as do various other outlets online like Itchy feet for travellers outdoors supplies.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, will look into them! Cheers Steve
