I'm planning a trip to Gavarnie in mid-September, ideally by overnight train to Lourdes and then bus to Luz St Sauveur.  Does anybody know approx how many buses a day run to Luz and whether there are taxis in Luz to get to Gavarnie (I assume there is no other means to get there from Luz)?

There always was a bus from Luz on to Gavarnie, but it's not an SNCF bus so the timetable is a bit hard to track down, online anyway. I'd guess it would still run in mid-Sept, even though that's a bit beyond 'peak season' for the French.

There is a bus early on a morning taking kids to school from Gavarnie so there will be another which picks them up to go back.Goes from the bus terminus in Luz.Used it last year September. Why not go to Cauterets and walk over from there. Two days walking staying a night in refuge Baysellance.Transport links good to Cauterets and it's a great walk.Luz is okay to reach too by bus

If you are thinking of using refuges beyond Gavarnie, they may well be thinking about closing and they may have a tendency to have run out of beer. The upside is that the mountains are quieter though.

Thanks for the info - it looks as though it should be possible to get the bus from Lourdes to Luz off the overnight train and then a taxi if necessary on to Gavarnie.  The plan is to stay a few nights at the Breche de Roland refuge and climb some of the peaks from there rather than go hut to hut.  A bit nearer the time I may try out my french on the tourist office in Luz to confirm things.

Bus from Lourdes to Cauterets and Luz is operated by SNCF  and hence is really a train in disguise. Timetable at

http://www.ter-sncf.com/midi_pyrenees//index.asp.

Normally one bus departs Lourdes for Cauterets  and makes a  connection with a Luz bus ( or the other way round).  Should be  able to purchase a ticket all the way from Paris to Luz .
