the reason it's hell martin is because the hip belt starts to collapse making it useless. the golite waist belt begins to collapse at its STATED carry weight of 12kg (the same STATED carry weight as the OMM) but will happily carry 13kg.

carry comfort is important depending upon what weight you are carrying. a larger pack is great for bulkier stuff or for ease of packing/getting something out without having to unpack and pack again. it can still uncomfortably collapse if the design isn't right or they're being rather optimistic with the stated carry weight.

my gregory(s) carry up to and a bit more of their stated weight comfortably.

No problem

Having tested with  a bunch of books I could do 9 OK but a bit over that (10.5?) and it really did give up. Not sure if it was the hip belt so much as the whole back system. The shoulder straps really aren't meant to take any weight.

I actually made the original statement because I spent a fair while carrying that sort of weight in a sac with a waist belt round my stomach. Balanced on my back OK so it was comfortable enough.

Still unconvinced that you can sensibly pack that much weight into one (Mine seemed reasonably full at around 5.5kg of normalish stuff.).

my comments are more aimed at the principle rather than the practice irrespective of the size pack. there will be a point where it's going to give up and/or start to reveal where it may not be comfortable - usually discovered after three hours with another seven to go - where that point is is extremely variable between manufacturers. omm are "optimistic", golite and gregory are spot on and a even a little conservative. comfort level is of course very personal.

moving from a sturdy comfort load carrier type pack to a lighter model may provide some surprises e.g. 10kg in the sturdy one can feel much heavier in a lighter one.

(oooh! i'm a martyr to soddin' packs)

5kg of camera stuff can boost the weight a bit. but that's my own fault.

Yup I can see that being dense enough to do it too..... But you are at least getting something for the pain!

Huh! The 65+10 bioflex one from Berghaus is not that heavy! I've got it.. It's really comfortable and great for 2-3 day stuff. I'm using it on my planned 6 dayer. The Pod Black Ice is lighter and good for climbing but nowhere near as comfortable for backpacking.

have never tried any of the other lightweight sacks so cant comment but i have the haglofs lim 55 which i have found comfy and swallows gear with ease.it has 3 huge pockets on the outside and 2 zip pockets.it seems to fit more in than my lowe alpine hyperlite 60+10 sack.i was gonna buy the crux ak57 + 5 but had a good look at it and tried it on personally i thought they were being a bit optimistic about its capacity.

diddy has the 45 litre lim and gets his kit in no problem.

Osprey Kestrel 48. It's a big sack for a stated 48 litres and while not super light is light enough. It will comfortably carry 12 Kg. In May, I did Glenfinnan to Knoydart and around carrying food for 5 days, tent etc. and the whole  lot came to 16KG with 2 litres of water and 2 man tent (Superlite Voyager). Never used the tent. 16Kg was just about the comfort limit for this sack. Most people who saw it packed thought it was a 60L job.

Osprey Exos 58 is only 1120grams - surely the best weight to size ratio on the market including a supported ventilated back (which most lightweight sacs dont have)

I'm really happy with mine, can definitely recommend, although you may struggle to find the 58 in the UK (58 retails at £140, Exos 46 at £130)
