That would be a last resort, it wouldnt be cheap. And as a student, i really cant afford it

Ah...get the point. Mmm, try putting an apeal out here (new thread, entitled lift wanted from Kendal to Glenridding, or, as an off chance, go to Morrisons Supermarket in Kendal and try hitching a lift?
Short answer - NO! All the buses in and out of Glenridding dry up around 5pm.
It's a couple of (hard) hours by bicycle - that's probably your best bet
Hmm, difficult situation. Travelling all the way from Bristol on the coach (7 and a half hours) so cycling really isnt an option. Just thought someone might have an alternative Thanks for the suggestions so far

Frances, Paddy's wonderful Lakelands encyclopedic knowledge was my main best guessed hope for you there really; but do not give up hope, some clever soul else might have an idea or two as the thread runs its life here ok, before your trip! Be positive ok! I have put up your other question on the water issue for you on a separate thread too here ok. Please can you go into your OM profile and activate your message member PM function so others can email you here at the site too if they wish to, cheers my mate. If people go offering solutions to the transport problem requiring offers of lifts etc though of course please clear that for safety/security through one of the regular girl members like Jules Bat Girl/ Hayley/ or Metric Kate/ NPC first though ok before accepting any such offers of help! I just mention that as plain common sense precautions really, for both youself or other new members reading this Frances.

It boils down to a taxi or hitch-hiking. Depends how much money you want to throw at it, and how much faith you have in human nature. I think it was the travel guy Simon Caldwell who said - "If you ever need your faith in human nature restoring, just stand beside the open road and stretch out your thumb." It never ceases to amaze me how someone will always stop and give a complete stranger a lift!

Thanks Paddy, what I really wanna make sure of is that Frances is not doing that kind of thing on her own though, accepting lifts or taxiing; and is with at least one walking buddy there if that sort of transport becomes a must. Her original plans fell through as her friends could not afford the trip they realised, or others too just plain seemed to lose interest sadly. I just hope that Sam her boyfriend is able to go there with her on the day. Would feel happier if she was travelling at night there with friends is all really!

It never used to cease to amaze me how many people didn't stop, and that was back in the 80s when it was commonplace. I must have clocked up thousands of miles by thumb, and from the memory of how I felt when someone stops I'll always stop if I've got room. As suggested above, put a thread up once you know whar day - Glenridding's not an unpopular destination for OMers and it would surprise me if you don't get an offer of a lift.
Dave - I found it helped if I got into the frame of mind that said - "Rejoice, for every car that passes, for the one that will eventually stop is getting closer all the time!"
I used to hitch a lot many years ago, even hitched back from my holiday job every day. More recently when I've hitched (usually in some back of beyond place) I've found it can take quite a good while to get a lift. Usually the remoter areas are easier. My suggestion is to post a new thread "Lift wanted...." as it's not at all impossible someone local to Kendal can help. 'Fraid I'm in Kent, so a bit too far away

More I think about...put a thread up...lift wanted...

Fran, you don't go via Kendal, you need to go via Penrith. If you get the same coach from Bristol (11.25, change at Birmingham) it will get you to Penrith at 17.20, in time to catch the last bus to Glenridding.

.........which departs Penrith bus station at 17.55.

thanks for that black sailor. But im afraid the bus to kendal is all paid for and booked. I cant afford to rebook the coach. The original plan was to meet friends in kendal and go onto glenridding from there (they have a car) but they have been sent to work away so that plan fell through. And now im kind of stuck in a rut!

If you've booked with Nat Express you should be able to change the ticket - and any admin fee will certainly be cheaper than a taxi.

You should stay overnight in Kendal, then head for Glenridding by bus the next morning. This morning, me and a pal overtook the bus that runs over Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding at about 0945. More correctly, the bus pulled in to the side of the road and allowed us to overtake!

Crikey, how fast were you walking Paddy?? No wonder you cover so many miles in a year...
