.JPG) Hi there Some idiot questions about buying and selling via OM (and online in general, I suppose) Just posted some stuff for sale in the classifieds section but realised I haven't the foggiest idea about taking payment. How is it done these days if you don't have a paypal account? Cheque and postal order? Transfer direct to bank account? All seems very slow. And an etiquette question: I'm assuming I wait for payment to arrive before sending the goods. Assumption correct? Thanks in advance

.jpg) Hi, no paypal shouldn't be a problem. Ask for a cheque or postal order and, yes, hold onto the goods until payment clears and you have the asking price.

.jpg) Its easy to open up a paypal or moneybookers account, and simplifies the whole process of selling online. It also saves you the bother of having to make time to go and pay a cheque/postal order into the bank/post office. It also speeds up the whole process, sending cheque, waiting for it to arrive - be paid in - clear and then the goods being sent, is going to take at least 2 -3 weeks.

.JPG) Cheers, Atlas. Questions answered. It just seemed like such an old fashioned way to do things (having got used to the speed and convenience of buying from retailers online) that I thought I might be missing some other obvious solution.

.JPG) Thanks, Monkey Space Pilot. In the process of setting up a Paypal account as we speak. It says I'll have to wait 2-5 working days for them to give me some free money! Very odd. I'm going to update my classified ad to take all this into account.

Or, if you don't mind privately sharing your bank account number/sort code with the buyer, most people have some kind of online banking these days which allows a payment to be made directly to your account. Done that recently with someone on here...

I've bought and sold only a few bits of stuff on OM and I think it's involved PayPal, cheque and bank transfer so far. I've had no problems of any kind, with anyone, or with any method of payment.

Some of us old fashioned people use cash . For small amounts place the notes in a card. I've never had a problem.

Mick - Could you put some notes in a card for me please? I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem with it either!

I've bought and sold using cheques, and never had any problems. Often I send stuff I've sold before the cheque has cleared, but that's usually when I've been dealing with an OM regular. I'd be a lot more careful with somebody who's just started posting -- especially if their only contributions have been in the fs/wanted section.

I've had no real problem to be honest on ebay....and absolutley no issue on OM...but then I tend to buy from people with reputation/history...and would be slow to buy from someone who had just joined OM and stuck up an ad...... Put it this way.....if someone could slip me £50, there would be a couple of sales posted here pronto...

If I'm selling stuff I like to avoid Paypal because they charge you. My prefered method is BACS transfer. Quick and simple and trackable

bank transfer is a bit more sensible these days with payments going through in a couple of hours instead of a variable number of days.

.jpg) Bank transfers are the standard way of doing things over here in Germany, cheques just don't exist. Paypal charges aren't so bad if you figure in the time and hassle of going to a bank with a cheque. Depends how much you value your time. If you have to drive 5 miles to get to a bank at dinnertime and wait in a queue for the one cashier to serve the worlds 20 slowest customers, then paypal can seem quite reasonable.

Me too, happily no problems buying here! Just sent cheque the two or is it three times? Yes, three times, brand new boots, Bushbuddy stove and lastly the brand new Blizzard bag in its special holder! All bits I really, really wanted too! I consider I was very very lucky in all three cases to get exactly the kit I was wanting!

Hi there, If you can get the person to send it a gift you can beat the paypal charges. Thanks, Stephen
|
 |
sorry stephen. all transfers attract a charge. the gift option allows the sender to either absorb the charge or pass it on.
