Kate, if you are meaning what I think you are meaning, I'm deeply shocked!  Just one letter change...

Interesting how there are no details of this person on his/her profile.

Try getting a bearing or distance to a waypoint on a mountainside. Can't be done so is useless as a nav aid.

1 post from this... person and it's an inflammatory one. On other forums we'd refer to this person as a troll (looking to stir up **it from behind the safety of a keyboard) and treat them accordingly.

But just coz i'm waiting for my pasta to cook and have a spare minute...

Claiming (incorrectly) that the 5800 cannot get bearings to waypoints/POI's is at best, misguided. Viewranger on Symbian software has 'panorama view' mode. Simply select your waypoint (or make one) and then turn your screen, in panorama mode to the waypoint. It will show the compass bearing.

I didn't know that!  Thanks.  But really, why would one want to in the first place?  I suppose you might, if you can't be bothered to get the map out, but I find that simply walking along with the red arrow over my target is so simple.  But then, I suppose, the phone is more vulnerable to being damaged than if it's in a pocket, so perhaps there is a need after all, the map staying put away.  So, a useful tip!

When husbanding battery life on the phone during multi-day trips I tend to use Viewranger for quick fixes for reassurance rather than following it at all times. The compass requires no batteries and can therefore be used freely.

That said, I didn't know about using the panorama function to get a bearing so very useful to know now!

@Robb. My point (to 'A nonny Mouse') was to show that the ablility is there, not that many people might need it to see a bearing.

Bear in mind that this feature isn't in the Android or IOS (Apple) version. Yet.
