I was going to buy a new Two man tent. Due to this scoop I think I will wait now.

I'm not too convinced by the pole grip 'thingys'. I would be worried about metal fatigue with repeated clamping in the same area.

 |
Speaking from memory, they look a bit like the new clamps on 2010 Leki poles.

Still, Vaude do seem to be on the money in terms of design & value. Their tents are very popular here in France and their packs look good too. I wonder what's wrong with the mini krab thingies that are used on other exoskeleton tents? Like Eureka 5th Season Exo for example? I can't see the advantage of clamping the poles... surely that just means that the tent can't deflect in the same manner (clips sliding over the poles allows some bending without stressing the joins & seams).

Does anyone know if the scrotum has 1 or 2 entrances and any dimensions?
|
 |
That scrotum looks rather wrinkly pitched to me, i don't like the "barn door" ends either, wonder if it's supposed to be pitched pole into the wind like the comp. ? Yes the "barn door" ends aer of some concern. Haveing said that it has been wind tunnel tested? Looks like it will give Terra Nova and Hillberg a run for thier money.

i was going to wait for a new scrotum but then a cheap akto appeared from f&t it will do until the spring

Looks like it will give Terra Nova and Hillberg a run for thier money. It's hard to be sure with what little we know so far, but I would say it's probably aimed at the Laser range's market niche rather than the Akto's, with priority given to lighter weight over living convenience. The pitching of tents a certain way relative to the wind is all very well up to a point, but any worthwhile tent will have to manage wind from any direction because it does change. If the centre of a depression slips by to the side overnight you'll have up to 180 degree windshift, with all directions between as it goes by... Think how aerodynamic (or rather not) a tunnel is sideways on, and they still do okay as long as they've been built and pitched well enough. Pete.

As far as pitching is concerned I was always "shield from the North cover from the West".
Have a look at this link for more info. http://lighthiker.wordpress.com/2009/07/20/outdoor-2009-tents/

As far as pitching is concerned I was always "shield from the North cover from the West". The thing about rules of thumb is they're "if all else is equal" things, but all other things typically aren't... If you've got a gale from the SE that's forecast to stay that way for the next day, for example, the above isn't that smart! And there's other factors, like "this piece of ground will only take my tent one way, so that's the way I'll pitch it", "if I pitch for the wind we'll both roll onto one another on one side every 10 minutes", and so on. Pete.

All very true. One thing in the favore of Side door tents like the Akto is you can sleep head eather end.
