On a previous visit I got visa prior to travel - may not be possible for next visit. Is sterling accepted for visa at Kathmandu airport or will i need American dollars?

I used dollars on my last visit - but I had them so used them out of choice first. I have an old form somewhere and will try to check.

Thanks Ben - looks like dollars only.

If you cant get Visas in advance, then I hope they improve their ability to be able to deal with the masses! Still with the other paper work you have to flll in on arrival it will help pass the time of day! Our experience last year was US$, but we obtained ours in advance. It also didnt take as long as is suggested in getting them back to us. In UK they will take Sterling, bank drafts or postal orders ( approx 15% if I remember correct). We had the big debate on was it "safe" to send currency to the visa ofice, in the end went for postal orders.

Yes last time I did it through embassy - good service, back within a week - also used postal order - additional cost for that plus recorded delivery both ways adds a bit onto basic visa price.

Sand Dancer: what prompts your question? I've just looked at the Nepal Tourism Board's web site and there fees are quoted in USD "or equivalent convertible currency". See welcomenepal.com

Just wanted to check whether that was "fact" - everybody I know who has bought on arrival happened to have dollars with which to pay. I emailed the embassy for clarification, but have not had an answer to date.

Crikey the price has rocketed, you used to get a 2 month tourist visa for $30, and you filled out the forms either at Kathmandu airport or they gave you the forms to fill out whilst you were on the plane, and you could extend it a month for another $30.... Getting your visa at the embassy is always a rip off though. Have a good trip anyway, where are you off to?

Yes you can definitely pay for your Nepal visa with pounds sterling however your change is normally given in USD$ (you can then change this to Nepalese rupees through one of the money changers in Thamel). A top tip is to download the visa form, print out and complete before arrival therefore you can go straight to the front of the queue while everybody else on your flight completes the forms. You can download this at: http://treks.com.np/visa/visa-app.pdf Have a great trip. Cheers, Roland www.themountaincompany.co.uk

Thanks Roland - reassuring (which is what us "old people" need). Will also check out your website. Mike - last trip was Annapurna Circuit, tackling "High Passes of Everest" this time - circuit of Everest region crossing Kongma La, Cho La and Renzon La, also 5 peaks - Nangkartshang, Chukung Ri, Kala Pattar, Awi Peak and Gokyo Ri (not sure whether any/all spelling correct!). Cost of visa has increased - although cannot remember what I paid last time.

Ah Quality, both regions are beautiful places in their own rights.. Think I'd go back to Annapurna though if I don't get to Pakistan first. Good luck on your trip, and watch out for those yetis! fraser
