Sure - It'll take a while for the trees to regrow naturally
Actually no idea if it would support much in the way of forests on the tops anymore. There must be a few bits of Scotland where they're not actively managing for grouse - how high do the trees get there?
Mick, Sounds like a great place to start! The ice sheet did not retreat as a direct result of man's action, so we'll let that go for now.
The demise of the region's forrest's, however, is far from nature's glory.
Man's impact on the land can be suprisingly heavy. We see a direct result of that now from generations of families buring everything in sight for winter heat, is no suprise the land is comparitivly barren now.
Reforestation is something being implemmented on the south island of New Zealand, where non-native species have overrun the landscape, so it's not a completely alien concept, and well within our ability to have a profound positive impact that can last for generations to come.
Arthur, I take your point about nature's processes, as opposed to man's intervention. I stand corrected and duly chastened - but I still like running over the heather moors and bogs with my dog!
