Hi

Can anyone recommend a good Campsite in Iceland, it has to be quite central to a town or village, and we will require it to have good public transport or be in walking distance of the landscape ie ice , rock, and good site seeing volcanos.

I have been looking at the WEB but am confused all the camp gounds look alike in Iceland, a field with a swiming pool with some large rocks in the back ground.

Hi

I stayed on 7 different campsites in Iceland a few years back - the National park areas only had Park dept sites which are basic but OK.  Apart from the big one Reykjavik, and the one at Skaftafell they were all fairly small (or minute) scale.

Depends where you want to go really -Iceland is the size of Ireland, so if you don't want to spend all day on coaches, you need to move camp to cover the ground.  Personally, I would decide what you want to see, then find out about the public transport, then make your campsite decisions.

If you haven't been before and want to see a fair bit, my advice would be to do a day trip from Reykjavik to Gulfoss/geyser when you first get there, then get yourself on a bus across one of the interior routes to Myvatn for a while.  Then come back via Skaftafjell and Landmannalaugar, Mount Hekla and the south coast route.  Or viceversa.  We did this with a 4x4 car -  hire vehicle (, which worked out expensive, but gave us lot's of flexibility - the ability to cover the distances in between at our convenience rather than the bus company's.Didn't manage to see the Northwest area though.

We stayed a couple of nights at the campsite at the village on the Northeast shore  of Lake Myvatn - it was great - lakeside pitches, a kitchen/common room and the usual  'hot but eggy'  showers.  We were warned about midges, but it wasn't as bad as I've experienced in the UK.

You can get a Trip to Askja from there and also many other areas -the semi active vocanic areas nearby to Myvatn, Dettifoss, Jokulsarglufur Nat Park etc.

Skaftafjell National Park is also pretty good - can do a day walk up Kristinatinder for amazing views over ice sheets/glaciers.

Try Dick Phillips for advice?  Knows the country pretty well - no - extremely well.  Very helpful, and a good source of advice, maps and everything else.  Has a lovely small, basic hostel at Fjottsdalur (sp?), a few hours from Reykavik, from where we walked to Landmannalaugar then Skogarfoss in mid May, three years ago.  Great area - and we saw no-one for 11 days!  But none of it was near a town!  Depends on what you want.  We have towns here - see enough of them, but the Icelandic landscape - wow!
