My brother-in-law has asked me to take my niece abseiling when we go to the lakes.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go? Nice and vertical, but not too high, preferably with easy, bomb-proof anchors at the top.
The only place I know is brown slabs, at the far end of shepherd's crag. This is a good place for abseiling, but it is usually busy, and I don't want to get in the way of anyone who has gone there to climb.
We're staying in the Pattrdale area, but any suggestions would be welcome.
I always thought Hodge Close Quarry at Tilberthwaite was a good laugh, but I think a large rock went and clobbered the metal staging at the bottom that kept you from landing in the water. Still, maybe if it hasn't been fixed, it might be even more entertaining if you have to set up a pendulum swing to land safely!
Not far from Hodge Close, Cathedral Quarry in Little Langdale was where we always took schoolkids for abseiling (long ago, pre all the form-filling and regulations).
Iirc there's a quite short wall at the 'front' of the main quarry, not far to the side of the big 'window' into the main cavern, and then if you want it there's the main wall at the back, which is pretty long. The anchors are provided by plentiful trees.
Oh, and earlier this year we saw a group abseiling in the old workings just to the left of the path as you climb up from the parking at Tilberthwaite on the path to go over to Coniston - I don't know what it's called but it's probably about 10 minutes up (the path with the ghyll on your right).
