Hi I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to getting tents but I am looking for a three man mountain tent. If possible I would like it to be light weight, three person, under £300 and at least semi geodesic. Any suggestions?

Hi Chris,

personally I wouldn't restrict yourself to semi / full geos. I used to think that it was essential but now regard good tunnel designs as offering similar security albeit at a cost of noise and a bit of pitch technique. For a lot less weight!

However, in light of what you've said, I'd say the lightwave g2 trek might tick all the boxes though it's small for a three-man (and large for a two man). I've a t2 from the same manufacturer and in my opinion they strike the sweet point between weight saving and durability. Others would differ... but I'm a midweight gear user that buys hoping kit will last many years. The extended porch version would give you... well... more space... but at a cost of weight and a few extra quid.

A similar beast is the ME Dragonfly 3XT which looks pretty good to me an can be had for slightly over your budget.

or even the T3 XT from Lightwave although its a tad more than £300

(it is a tunnel but a good one)

ID,

I agree... but I'm waiting a "Go" to recommend tunnels

I've a t2 with both standard and xt flysheets to give me the choice. With the XT fly, it would be big enough for three mates as there's a lot of room for gear in the porch. The inner would be cosy for three but tolerable for a shorter trip. The t3 xt is huge! Sadly, there's no ultra version (and who needs the arctic one!) but 4kg makes it suitable for sharing between three with no grief.

Another brand I'd look at for value for money would be Vaude. The Mark II or Mark III (not strictly geo but robust nonetheless) can be had for less than your budget.

there is the force 10/vango vortex 300. perhaps doesn't qualify as "light".

i'd maybe go for the vaude power odyssee 3 though, if it were me.

I had a look at the tents you have mentioned and they all look very good. While I was having a look I stumbled across the msr mutha hubba hp tent. It looks good and it's three man with a big vestibule and is pretty light at only 2.8 kg. It is also under my budget. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I am selling a brand new Vango force 10 spindrift 300 mountain tent. This tent is one month old, never even been taken out of the bag, with receipt. Ill health forces reluctant sale, Cost £350 new, will take £295. Not sure what postage and packing will be but I am sure it will not be much.

TNF westwind,if you are gonna use it in the mountains, I found a problem with condensation if I used it off the hills, the worse the weather got the better the tent performed,

I ended up just using it for high wild camps in winter, worked a treat,no problems.

After 3 years I picked up a 'ROBENS Grey Rock' this turned out to be perfect all round for what I needed, 2 entrances and two porches on opposite sides of the tent,a superb set up for two people, and much quicker to pitch than the westwind
