Let's have a look at the claims...

'Natural Infrared'

The claims made for Nexus Energy Source do seem extraordinary. In brief, the fabric contains aluminium, platinum and titanium and is claimed to emit 'natural infared'. The effect of this, says Accapi, is wide ranging:

'[It] promotes the re-organisation of the water cluster in our organism improving transportation of nourishment and toxins and thereby tissue hydration and cellular metabolism. The system works with the athlete during competition, recovery, free time, sleep and training. '

Natural infrared. You mean the electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by EVERYTHING warmer than absolute zero? Glad I paid for that then. More steaming brown matter here. 4 to 14 microns you say? Would that correspond, I wonder, to a black body spectrum for an object of, say, 30C ... which has peak at 9.5microns. I.e... a PERSON!

Looks like another brand of compression wear, keeping the muscles warm and under some elastic pressure. Probably of some use to pro rugby players and the like.

Accapi has carried out studies which it says give scientific proof that the fabric increases power in cyclists and quotes top mountaineer Simone Morro as saying that sleeping in Nexus lowers his resting heart rate by 5 beats per minute. It's even claimed to effect core stability, help the elimination of lactic acid, increase muscular power, prevent microtrauma and muscular strains and reduce recovery times and post-exercise pain.

All the same claims of any other brand of compression wear from Underarmour to Skins to Canterbury... And Mr Morro probably sleeps with a lower HR thanks to knowing his mortgage is in part paid off by Nexus...

The product line includes clothing and socks, water bottle covers - the fabric is also claimed to break down liquids with beneficial results - and athletic supports, which are supposed to speed up healing.

Not sure I want my athletic support to break down liquids !!! I might need them later...

Oh and on top of all this, it's also claimed to dry faster and have a natural anti-bacterial action without any additional treatments.

Proof?

As journalists, we're naturally pretty skeptical and the claims for Nexus Energy Source are so extraordinary that it's going to take an awful lot to convince us, but for now we're keeping an open mind.

Good thing I'm not a journalist. I might get skeptical...

That sort of thing makes me pissed off rather than skeptical.

If it's a baselayer that works well then very good. Compression isn't new and seems to work, but they don't need to follow it up with 'science'. At least platinum and titanium are anti-cancer, so eating the top may reduce your risk of tumours.

I'm with Mr Fuller on this one. As soon as my bull-shit radar switches on, i lose interest. A hard sell is a sure way to make sure i don't buy something.

Anti bacterial without any additional treatments seems believable. After all most people seem happy with just silver or copper to do that!

So aluminium, platinum and titanium might just manage it between them.....

The three elements, platinum, titanium and aluminium form 75% of the material in the TexUp products

hmmm, that would be one uncomfortable piece of clothing!

LOL with the emitting natural infrared.

I'm not sure whats more embarrassing: people just lacking zero scientific knowledge or being part of a race where people actually make this stuff up.

The problem is that to someone who has done biology/chemistry/physics up to 13/14 and scrapped through not really caring, it sounds perfectly plausible. They (Nexus) know that of course!

Haha, reading the bottom of the John's link on the main page.

All our products have not been scientifically tested but have been used successfully by many worldwide.

makes me mad! They also say These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease but most of their products state completely to the contrary.

I hope they don't make those claims in advertisements over here.

If they do, the advertising standards authority might have something to say about it.

On the other hand, I hope they do, it would be nice to see what happens.

Great link John, any amount of garbola on there. I like this product,

"Lose weight while you walk with the weight loss insoles."

errrr....maybe the walking has something to do with it.

Looks like X-bionic have a worthy competitor in product bullshit. These guys' packaging should be a wonder to behold....

As a piece of marketing, it has long been know that, as my Dad used to say, bullshit baffles brains.

For some scholarly comment, see here for how including lots of technobabble makes people more likely to believe things, even when the babble is irrelevant to the matter at hand.

Surely if this stuff emits infra-red then that means that it's not keeping you warm?  Doesn't sound too helpful to me...

dmm. easy to explain that phenomonem (sp?!!). the audience won't admit it doesn't understand something especially if their position would suggest that they should.

simply known as management bull which impresses others of the same ilk whilst merely reinforcing the oiks opinion that mangement is fulll of shite.

sprinkle a large dusting of gullibility all over it and you have a winner.
