I am organising a free charity event to take place on 31st July 2010. It is an extremely demanding 24 hour hike over the 10 highest peaks in the Lake District, covering over 70km with 7km of ascent and descent! Some people say it's not possible, would anyone like to prove them wrong? Race information and registration details can be found on the website:

I think, maybe, I'll go along with the chap who asked if 23K in one day was feasible We should be well matched...

Amazing challenge and good luck in the attempt.

John

Not that I'm suggesting it's easy but in 2006 Joss Naylor (then aged 70 !!) did 70 fells covering 50 miles, ascending 25,000 ft in 21 hours.

All I know is that my best efforts have taken me four times as long as Joss Naylor. He climbed all Wainwrights Fells in a week. I took four weeks.

All credit to you for setting up a charity event, but just a word of caution - this looks like a pretty serious challenge for the vast majority of folks - have you consulted the local MRTs and sought their advice? I did the 2008 OMM in Borrowdale and the organisers took an absolute panning in the media after inaccurate reporting of 100s of competitors getting lost. Mountain Marathon organisers always work closely with local MRTs even although the events are 'unsupported'.

Thanks Del, that is good advice. I was going to let all authorities know nearer the time but you are right, I will let them know sooner rather than later.

I have now secured enough sponsorship to be able to provide Lakeland Spring bottled water for all participants. The unsupported nature of the 10 Peaks challenge has put a lot of people off so I am hoping now I can confirm the addition of aid stations/check points along the route these people may reconsider and join the 44 other people already signed up.

I can also confirm that the Barmore suite in the Keswick Country House Hotel will act as a base for the event where registration will take place and participants will need to report back to after completing/ or retiring from the hike.

A panoramic of the course can be seen on the 10 Peaks website:

It's been a while since I posted. Sorry, but after the success of the 2010 event I have been busy organising a bigger and better event for 2011. This event will take place on Saturday July 2nd.

Now with 10 corporate sponsors the event will be fully supported and we are able to provide transport, water, energy drinks, gels and bars and also a free branded technical Tshirt for everyone who takes part.

In 2010 no one managed more than 9 of the 10 peaks. Entries close for this year's event on 4th June so if you want to see if you could be the first to complete the 73km course visit www.10peaks.com
