Cracking bit of kit and worth every penny. Still not quite confident enough to leave my paper map at home yet, but I have left it in my rucksac, twice!

The way the 5800 eats batteries when it's on GPS mode, I wouldn't consider leaving my paper map at home! You never know when a piece of electronic gear is going to wimp out. Obviously one could lose a paper map too mind...

What I have done is buy a BT activepilot bluetooth gps unit, (£16.00) off FEEBAY. Rechargable, reliable, VERY compact, (tucks into a shirt pocket) and it saves phone battery! (Nokia n95 8gb) I also carry a spare phone  battery with me but not had to use it yet!!

Yes, I have seen the extended batteries, but they are quite thick and need a new cover for the phone! The spare battery sits in my rucksack out of the way.

I just end up leaving the extended battery in most of the time as the original battery is not great, if I dont use the GPS I can get 4 days oppose to the 2 of the original.

I have two spare batteries for my 5800, the 2nd one bought through Amazon from Online, as below. It was the cheapest to have a capacity stated, the same as the original:
B10077#1 - Original Nokia BL-5J 1320 mAh Battery for 5800 XpressMusic - From Online - £7.67 delivered.
I have used it quite a bit now and it seems to be as good as the original, which the 2nd was not - not quite, at least. I would think that I'd get 10 - 12 hours solid use on Viewranger. Just back from 5 hours walk, with GPS running. Phone came off charge yesterday morning, used a bit since then as phone, had 6/7 bars battery at start of walk, came back with 2/7 left. Hope this helps. But it seems that batteries generally run down faster once the first bar has gone. I'm quite happy with the battery life of this combination.
Kate - I know your 2nd battery was poor - try one of these?

Re Viewranger, I am in awe of its abilities. It is hard to see how it could be better, and if anyone is pondering its purchase, get on with it! Very easy to use, and being able to see your route on the map is enormously useful. It really shows the inaccuracies of the OS, too - as I have just seen yet again on a well known path on the moor here - it's way out. I teach and assess navigation, too, and the ability to show someone their track on the screen, with any errors in route-following clearly displayed is a brilliant teaching tool.
