Excellent stuff. My brother had a hole in his jacket and I gave it to a friend's mum who used to make Lowe Alpine's jackets. When we got it back we couldn't even tell the hole had ever been there, and she'd had to cut open the lining to get to the hole! Repair jobs, when done well, can save you buying a new jacket.

Ah, the article is up... I hadn't noticed... Hope it's useful.

 > I'm guessing but it should work on event as the ptfe is still encapsulated in pu. I don't think it's PU, John; it's some other fancy polymer, I think. I'm sure tom van wauwe will be able to tell us...

I've asked Montane about this. It's not PU, but eVent won't tell Montane what it is either.

I have a torn Berghaus Gortex Paclite smock. It's the original Paclite (two layers?) The inner surface is white with raised black polka-dots. As the surface isn't smooth will this method work OK?

I've also used seam tape to repair competitive swimsuits ,saving £60 on new ones . Also i repaired stuff using the same principle ,but by sandwiching wonderweb hem tape (widely available) between the rear of the garment surface and a backing material (nylon ,lycra etc ). 3 layer tape also works on neoprene cuts .

What - no mention of Duct Tape? Ashamed of you all

I bought some adhesive goretex patch thingies when I ripped my Paclite jacket on some barbed wire. So now I have a big navy blue patch on my much-lighter-blue jacket, but at least it's still waterproof!

 > As the surface isn't smooth will this method work OK? Earlier versions of Paclite were still tape seam sealed, so some glues must stick. At 60p/metre for the tape, it's worth a try, don't you think? Please report back with your success or failure.

As you say it's worth a try. I've ordered some from Pennine. I'll report back. The smock is of sentimental value as it survived an earthquake with me, though it suffered less injury than I did.

Thanks for the article. It gave me confidence to buy a pair of second hand berghaus gortex paclite trousers with an L-shaped rip that looked like it might have been caused by getting caught in the chain of a bicycle. They have the ripstop type outer layer, I think. I managed to repair from the inside fairly well (I like to think) thanks to your guidance. But it was too freyed at the corner of the L-shaped rip to do a good join there (the sticky side of the seamseal tape was visible from the outside). It may have been okay like that but to be on the safe side I decided to put a bit of the tape on the outer side of the shell too, and it seems to have stuck well, at least for now. Cheers for the advice.

I have three waterproof jackets, all with small holes in them. I have repaired two with Tenacious Tape and one with a similarly coloured Goretex patch. I was going to buy a new jacket, but I'll probably go for re-doing the tape and reproofing.
