Gosh Chris, you read the posts really closely don't you! Fancy picking up on my choice of words - subconsciously using the past tense. You ever considered a career replacing Paxo on Newsnight?
As for the boots, I still use them actually, for walking the dog and such. We have marshes behind our house and they cope well with the mud and wet there. But I don't wear them on the hills anymore as they went all bendy on my and were basically worn out.
That siad they had started to have a damp spot at the flex points on the uppers and they were taking a long time to dry out. I wouldn't sya that the lining had gone, but they weren't at optimum performance.
But you can't fault a new pair of gore-tex booties in the soggy ground. But they do need lots of loving care and I would agree with you when you say that they don't last as long as a non-lined pair.

I guess I'm used to checking my own stuff closely so I do that with most things I read!
Damp spots at the flex point does suggest the membrane is leaking at that point. It usually fails at just one or two points, leaving the rest of the boot waterproof, which is why drying can take a long time.
New membrane lined boots certainly keep your feet dry on soggy ground. The pair I was wearing did so last week. But a pair of SealSkinz socks does the same and you don't have to wear them all the time.
The snow is deep enough to go over the tops of gaiters here at present.

Change of subject slightly. I was walking the dogs at the wekend, and just happened to notice my fleecy hat was made in China. So this got me thinking, just how ethical our the outdoor manufacturers? Are the manufacturers using cheap labour to produce our expensive kit, to prop up their profit margins, or are the people in places like China being given a fair hourly rate?

I know, and they claim it is all so the customer can have cheaper goods. But lets face it none of the savings are ever passed onto the customer, they just go straight into the md's bonus and to the shareholders. Now that makes me sound like I think it is ok to exploit the poorer nations if the savings are passed on to the customer. But I am not. Prices could stay as they are and the exploited could be payed a fairer wage, while the middle guy (the brand owner) takes a smaller slice of the action.

Another thing I think maybe cool is a what readers are reading at the moment column. Maybe list their last 5 outdoor type books that they have read.

.jpg) Picos de Europa.
I've had two pairs of GTX lined boots, membranes went within days on both. But if the boot fits, buy it anyway.

Any chance of publishing a list of future gear tests, its a b****r when the month after you buy some new kit it gets a bad review, 3 or 4 tests in advance would be good. Adrian.

Maybe publish next months agenda in the hills so you can cover the routes the same month as the trail team did them.

Yeah right...like they actua...sorry. No I won't continue in that line.

I was probably asking a bit much Al.
They did an article in March on the cobbler. Produced this year,i think not? A route more suitable(enjoyable) for the month of April/May perhaps?
Also Grade 2 scrambles and above, should in my opinion be produced for the warmer months.
In a nut shell the right info for the right time of year!
P.S No old Photos either, Ive caught them out once or twice! By giving us next months agenda they could use our photo's and perhaps put us on the payroll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
