Hi,

Am new to this forum.  I have  a very old (25 years) Ultimate Supertramp double "A" frame tent which is on need of serious renovation.  I am wanting to get it back to working order for some camping trips to the Lakes and Scotland this year.

The groundsheet is no longer waterproof, the main zip to the flysheet is broken and the flysheet itself is not waterproof any more.  I have not used it for some ten years or so because of family holdays taking precendent over solo camping trips, but do not want to shell out on a new tent if I can avoid it.  I also need a new "A" frame joining piece for the poles - this is the bit that holds the two poles together at the top.

I have many happy memories of wild camps in this tent - Dartmoor, Lakes, Skye and North West Highlands and want to get it back up and rnning again - it was a fantastic tent 20 years ago.

 Any advice as to:

Where to source a replacement zip from?

How to go  about reproofing the flysheet and groundsheet

How to get a new "A" frame joining piece?

For a Zip try Point North - http://www.profabrics.co.uk/snap_product_search.php

Reproofing the Flysheet, probably the only thing you can do is paint it with something like Grangers Fabsil or Nikwax Tent and Gear Proof

For my flysheet (20 y/o Phoenix Phreeranger) I used the Nikwax as I couldn't get the Grangers stuff but I poured it into a bowl and painted it on with a 4" brush and then rubbed it in with a damp cloth

You could have a new groundsheet fitted, try Scottish Mountain Gear

Personally I wouldn't bother, just use a sheet of plastic under the groundsheet. Temporary double glazing film is said to be good, apparently it's pretty tough but very light. Available Here

.

For the 'A' pole joint you might try Blacks/Millets or some of the Vango retailers, they must have a similar part for the Force Ten ridge tents.

Hope this helps

Where to source a replacement zip from?

Anywhere that does alterations should have plenty.  If you want a really good one then YKK are generally reckoned to be a good benchmark.

How to go  about reproofing the flysheet and groundsheet

With the groundsheet, it ain't going to happen if you want genuinely waterproof.  A new one will have molten PU added on at the material factory stage and you can't replicate that sort of thing at home.  If you want something that's really waterproof then get it replaced.  Scottish Mountain Gear are a good source for this, and are probably good people to talk to anyway about this particular project as it's a lot of their business so they'll know it better than most (certainly better than me!).

If the fly is canvas there are various re-proofers available that will do it, but for nylon it's again the case that its factory coatings that make a fly properly waterproof.  An impregnating proofer will help "top up" the waterproofing and might be enough, Fabsil is the usual suspect.

How to get a new "A" frame joining piece?

If one from a Force 10 will fit then Vango can supply, otherwise check your local fabricators to see if they can cruft something together.  SMG might have suggestions.

There comes a time when renovation is primarily for warm happy feelings more than practicality.  Nothing wrong with that because warm happy feelings is what the whole outdoors game is about, but if you just want a working tent I'd look to get a newer one.  You can get remarkably good things for very little money these days.

Pete.

I suspect you may end up spending more on repairs/renovations, to end up with a tent which is still really rather old and may well let you down, than the cost of a cheapie new tent? I can certainly appreciate the emotional attachment tho!

If my memory is right the top of the A fgrame was similar to that used on my 30 yr old ultimate packer EP. fairly unique and not at all like the vf10 A.

my fabric has gone a little brittle, hence question if it is really re proofable Ground sheets. were they ever really water tight. mine always went dark brown and appeared to let water in.

I would like to refurbish my EP, but just accept that it it too long in the tooth. Im sure you will find something functionally similar for the cost of a good repair. tents ad fabrics have moved on a lot over the years.

Thanks for all your advice.  Scottish Mountain Gear looks a good bet.  I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Robert,

I pensioned off an Ultimate Tramp many years ago - I still have the tent so probably have the A-pole connector (the Tramp is a single A-pole tent). You are welcome to it if you still need it.

Hi David

This sounds like exactly the bit that I am looking for.  Would welcome this if you have no further need for it.

Thanks
